I really wanted this to feel as special as the dedication in front of the book did. Although it didn‘t quite meet my expectations, I do think the author had admiral intentions. There are plenty of young adult books that I think are enjoyable for older readers but, I do believe this might work much better for the age group it was meant for.

This book totally sucked me in! I love a kidnapping story and this was a good one. A decent twist, good audio narration, with good respect towards the effects of trauma. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

A really intriging story. It's hard to put the book down. I'm asking myself many questions.

"When I finally made it home, nearly seven months to the day later, my pretty purple running shoes - with the lime-green swooshes and the thick pink treads - were still fully intact, sitting in the hallway closet, spared from the wretched rain puddles. While I, on the other hand, was broken beyond repair."

This describes pretty accurately the struggle to find yourself and your place in the world after going through something so tragic. Trying to pick up the broken pieces. It‘s an emotional ride and I really appreciated this one.

I'm a little obsessed with kidnap books, or books about people trapped in places and how they'll get out. So I'm really happy to add this amazing story to my collection! Jane broke my heart and the people around her were so awful to her, but we ended on a high note.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow. This book. I‘ve been reading for hours cause I couldn‘t stand the thought of putting it down without finishing it. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way through. I‘m a huge fan of having two timelines and this one was so well done. Cons below. // My foster Max is finally learning how to dog.

This was compulsively readable, but I don't think the author executed this story well at all. The “twist“ is incredibly obvious and predictable so nothing about the story felt realistic. The use of trauma and mental illness felt exploitative. The way mental health professionals and loved ones treated Jane after severe trauma was so inappropriate that it wasn't believable. There are better versions of this trope out there. #ARC

I enjoyed Stolarz's writing, but I found myself annoyed a lot while reading this. The story alternates between now &then, which I found effective in holding my attention. Jane is a teenage girl who was taken &held captive for 7 months. She chooses to write about her experience as a form of therapy. The plot was predictable but the story flowed. What got me irritated was how Jane's mom and best friend, Shelley, treated her and expected her to act.

3.5 stars. Jane tells her story by keeping a journal after she escapes. She goes back and forth between her time as a captive and after she escapes. It‘s heartbreaking to read her thought process as she tries to make sense of her experience. She deals with shame, regret, guilt, anger and loneliness. You go on her journey of recovery and you are rooting for her the whole time.
