Debbie is wishing something would happen. Something good. To her. Soon. In the meantime, Debbie loses a necklace and finds a necklace (and boy does the necklace have a story to tell), she goes jeans shopping with her mother (an accomplishment in diplomacy), she learns to drive shift in a truck (illegally), she saves a life (directly connected to being able to drive, thus proving something), she takes a bus ride to another town (in order to understand what it feels like to be from "elsewhere"), she meets a boy (who truly is from "elsewhere"), but mostly she hangs out with her friends: Patty, Hector, Lenny, and Phil. Their paths cross. Their stories crisscross. And in Lynne Rae Perkins's remarkable book, a girl and her wish grow up. Illustrated throughout with blackandwhite pictures, comics, and photographs by the author. Ages 10+

2/52: Criss Cross

I thought this book was incredibly charming. It really shows how life is as a teenager without love and drama. The pictures in the book really added to the story. Despite a lot of negative opinions on it, I couldn‘t put this book down.

I am baffled as to why this is rated so low on Goodreads. It really is a great book about kids who are stuck between the age of wanting to be close to their parents and wanting to become individuals and how their paths cross. It was written with a subtle humor, and I found myself giggling nearly every chapter. #NewberyEpicChallenge

TheBookHippie One of my daughters favorites ! I‘ve gifted to several teens who just love it. 3y

I fell in love with this mellow book. A band of childhood friends enjoyed a summer of hanging out, learning how to drive, meeting new people, helping neighbors. There was no plot centered around drugs or gangs or sex. Just doing what real teens should be doing - growing up with close friends.

Great middle grade story. Loved the thoughts from their young minds.

A book with all-around good kids that you don't notice much at the front and center. They are true and believable and we peek into their lives at their most self-conscious stage. Narrated by Debbie who wants something big fto happen, and Hector who feels like he is unfinished. They spend the summer discovering selves, their changes, and each other. No big dramatic moments, but just some very real teens here. Some funny moments. #NewberyChallenge

A Newbery Award winning, RF novel about 14 year old Debbie and her wish that something would happen to her. I‘d like this story in my classroom best as independent reading. Essay writing and other lesson plans below!

I love books like this where you get to spend a lot of time in the character's heads. A+!
