The Spire
The Spire: With an introduction by John Mullan | William Golding
6 posts | 10 read | 1 to read
'...the folly isn't mine. It's God's Folly. Even in the old days He never asked men to do what was reasonable. Men can do that for themselves. They can buy and sell, heal and govern. But then out of some deep place comes the command to do what makes no sense at all - to build a ship on dry land; to sit among the dunghills; to marry a whore; to set their son on the altar of sacrifice. Then, if men have faith, a new thing comes.' Dean Jocelin has a vision: that God has chosen him to erect a great spire on his cathedral. His mason anxiously advises against it, for the old cathedral was built without foundations. Nevertheless, the spire rises octagon upon octagon, pinnacle by pinnacle, until the stone pillars shriek and the ground beneath it swims. Its shadow falls ever darker on the world below, and on Dean Jocelin in particular.

Inspired by the spire of Salisbury Cathedral, The Spire deals with the construction of a 404ft spire, the vision of Dean Jocelin, who is determined it will be completed against the advice of pretty much everyone else. For him, it‘s a #LabourOfLove

Bailedbailed

I read a quarter of this and couldn‘t connect at all with the story or, especially, the prose. I found myself having to re-read almost every sentence. I didn‘t like the writing at all, despite loving The Lord Of the Flies.

TrishB Missed your bails 😁 (edited) 5y
Lindy Me too. I wanted to bail after 5 pages, persevered until the end of chapter 1, then gave up entirely. 5y
shawnmooney @Lindy High five! 😍 5y

Lindy @shawnmooney It‘s a good thing I‘ve got The Tale of Genji to read while I‘m away from home for a week. So far, no risk of bailing on that; love it. 5y
shawnmooney @Lindy Yay! I finally replied to you on Voxer yesterday, by the way. No need to listen to it immediately, of course. I was just a bit worried because I couldn‘t see you anywhere on social media for a few days and you hadn‘t weighed in on the buddy read either . Shall I announce your bail there or would you like to do it? :-) 5y
Lindy @shawnmooney Yes, go ahead and announce my bail. I‘ve got very limited access to the Internet where I‘m staying. Did you see my message to you on Twitter? Couldn‘t figure out how to send a photo on Voxer. 5y

A chilling, atmospheric piece of historical fiction. Golding covers so much ground in this story about the ill-fated construction of a 400ft cathedral spire including obsession, corruption, desire and jealousy. There are a lot of dark emotions and a potent Freudian undercurrent as the Spire slowly rises and the foundations of the cathedral and the lives of its people begin to founder...

LeahBergen You have me intrigued now! I should read this. 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen Really enjoyed it. Golding is a master of atmosphere and dark descent 6y

2017 #142 historical fiction audio I have no clue what this was about (besides a spire), why it was important (besides being written by a person who won a nobel prize), or why I stuck with it (besides being read by Cumberbatch). I loved listening and really didn't care that I didn't know what was going on.
