pickShadowplay is a lovely, engaging work of historical fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed it and spent a little time learning more about Ellen Terry, Bram Stoker, and Henry Irving and their time at the Lyceum. My eyes popped when I found this picture of Irving…inspiration for Dracula? Ya think?!
pickI loved this wonderful story about Bram Stoker, Henry Irving, and Ellen Terry from the 1870's when Stoker,newly married travels to London to be personal sec to the actor then manager of the lyceum theatre. The writing evokes a city haunted by the ripper, while legend, ghosts and various characters allow for the creation of the horror masterpiece. A story of friendship, theatre, and horror.And I managed to dig out an old photo from a whitby trip.

pickI felt like I was on a journey of different emotions of how I felt about this book. It is gorgeously written and I do recommend for sure. It's the beginning and the ending where this shines. It's the middle that dragged for me. But it's really good stuff!
It's a completely gloomy, gray and rainy day out there today. Shadowplay seems like the best book to match the mood and atmosphere.

This book is an homage to actors and writers and late 19th century London. Joseph O‘Connor fictionalises this story around the facts of Bram Stoker‘s life, his beautiful friendship with Henry Irving and Ellen Terry and their creation of the Lyceum theatre. It‘s more complex than your average historical novel with jumps ⬇️
pickWonderful. ❤️ Hope it‘s made into a movie one day with every detail included. I see Ralph Fiennes playing Irving, Liam Neeson playing Stoker, maybe Helena Bonham Carter playing Ellen Terry.
pickThoroughly enjoyed this tale of Bram Stoker, Henry Irving and Ellen Terry set in 1870s London . Great behind-the-scenes look at the theatre world, I loved the drama, arch comedy and gothic feel. Some poignant scenes towards the end as they age. It was a bit episodic at times and it hinted at Stoker being gay (did anyone else find this?), without committing to it. But great, lively writing and a fascinating story, told with compassion.
Shopped from a TBR pile. 📚 I have a few.📚 I usually like Joseph O‘Connor so feeling pretty hopeful. 🎭
I‘m reading this for a book club, as it‘s a bit outside my usual genres. Not quite sure yet of my feelings about it.

Ellen Terry wears a veiled hat in the street , so as not to be noticed... she is so famous in London ... I loved her character ❤️

so-soI should‘ve loved this. I read it during the week of Halloween and it was a great spooky tale of literary and theatre history, weaving in elements of the creation of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, the indecency trial of Oscar Wilde, & the terror of Jack the Ripper. I even loved the conceit of the 3-act structure. The Coda though was boring, self indulgent, ruined it for me.
