Flight is the fascinating story of four travellers whose journeys intersect one winter in Dublin. Set in Ireland in 2004 as a referendum on citizenship approaches, this impressive novel explores the themes of travel and trouble, and has been hailed by theGuardianas a "new breed of novel."

#marchintoreading day 17: #irishauthors
I have to admit I haven't really read many contemporary Irish writers. Another post will soon follow with a list of books I'd like to read.
Flight is probably the most recent book I read by an Irish author. I loved how it discussed belonging and citizenship - one of its characters is a woman from Zimbabwe and it is set in 2004 as a referendum on citizenship approaches. (Reusing an old photo! Oops)

TrishB I'll just throw John Boyne's name out there again 😀👍 7y
Andrew65 The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas had me in tears at the end, but a great book! 7y

Maybe I'll give it another shot in the future, but it was a bit too slow moving and repetitive for me.

I really love the writing of this book, but I'm only on page 26 and already have been introduced to what seems to be many key characters... My brain is scrambling 😲

Megabooks It drives me a little batty when there are too many major characters! 8y
BookBabe @Ebooksandcooks me too. 😑 8y
MrBook Happens to me as well, lol. 8y
MrBook Hence my hesitancy toward Game of Thrones. 8y
AbstractMonica @Ebooksandcooks @BookBabe @MrBook I'm finally getting the hang of everyone and the quick scenario changes😐 8y

I wasn't expecting this for a few more weeks. I'm so happy it's here because I had nothing else to read!

This book! Why aren't more people reading and talking about this book? A woman moves fr Zimbabwe to Ireland in hopes of a better life for her family. But this is 2004 and the referendum on citizenship is about to take place. Belonging. Displacement. Immigration. Racism. Good writing! Read it!

When you have kids who are early risers, getting up at 6 on a Saturday to have a quiet breakfast to yourself makes all the sense in the world.

Onceuponatime Nice! My favorite time of day 8y
IndyHannaJones Very nice. I went for avocado and eggs on toast myself...with a bucket of coffee of course 8y
scripturient Best time of the day. Enjoy! Too bad my toddler is usually up at 5(!) at the moment, otherwise I'd do the same as you (but getting up at 4 would be a bit too much). :) 8y

Currently reading this beautifully written book! I love stories of people who are feeling lost or are experiencing the immigrant life, and this one comes with some really interesting characters.
