Black Bead: Book One of the Black Bead Chronicles
Black Bead: Book One of the Black Bead Chronicles | J D Lakey
10 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Best Seller: #1 in SciFi Colonization, Bestseller: Top 5 in Science Fiction 1/30/2016 Editorial Reviews: "Mesmerizing page turner" "A thrilling ride from start to finish!" If you liked Avatar and Ender's Game, you'll love Black Bead! On a savage, outlying planet an enclave of psionically-trained humans have built a utopian, matriarchal society that lives in harmony with all life. Leaving behind the polluted and corrupt world in which they lived, they colonized a new home far from the eyes of the galactic empire. Shielded from the rest of the galaxy by the dangerous beasts that inhabit their lush, forested world, the village lives a simple life under their Home Dome. But their goal was more than just to live in peace - they wanted to create the perfect human who could bring peace to the galaxy. Rather than merely cloning themselves, they began to manipulate genes in order to create a race of mutants with enhanced telepathic powers. Under the direction of the ruling coven, each child of the Windfall Dome is tested at a young age to asses their abilities - a test which is can plot the course for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, Cheobawn - the daughter of the ruling First Mother to the dome - is marked with the Black Bead on her Choosing Day, a symbol of bad luck and shame. It seems the child the village had placed so much hope in would not be the future ruler they had hoped for. Yet there is something powerful about her that the elders don't understand. Finally of age, Cheobawn is chosen to join a pack to act as the psychic Ear on a foraging mission outside the dome. She knows this is her chance to prove herself. But something sinister stalks them and each member of the pack must draw on their unique strengths and a lifetime of training if they want to survive to see another day. In her visionary new series, The Black Bead Chronicles, author J.D. Lakey invites you to journey along with Cheobawn, Megan, Tam, Connor, and Alain as they use their wits and their Luck to unravel the mysteries of the deceptively bucolic life beneath the dome in this coming of age metaphysical science fiction adventure.

My Kindle just tried to sell me this book that I already own and have read! 😂 @Ruri_kaichou interviewed the author for the #EclecticReaders podcast last year! It's a quick and interesting read, but my Kindle needs to keep up with us! 📚🤣

Smrloomis 😂 I guess recommendations haven't exactly been perfected yet... 7y
jmtrivera @Smrloomis Ha, not quite! But at least they picked something I liked! 7y

Lakey‘s Black Bead will snatch you up, racing headlong behind Cheobawn and her Pack on their harrowing First Foray. The themes of synchronicity/ interconnectedness run a vivid vein of silver through the story. There are great lessons about cooperation, and the valuable insights lost if you discount one person (or class of people) because of arbitrary class distinctions.

Mehso-so

This one was just meh for me. It's a fine adventure story with a bit of world building for a series that I believe has 5 books. I'm hit or miss with sci-fi/fantasy, so I found some of the fantastical aspects distracting. Those who love the genre will likely appreciate this more than I did.

The newest #EclecticReaders #AuthorInterview #Podcast episode is out today! It's about the first book in a new #Scifi series, and the interview is quite interesting, even if you haven't read the book, and, who knows, maybe it'll make you want to pick up a copy 😉 Listen on iTunes or at sunriserobot.net/eclecticreaders/21 and let me know your thoughts!

So excited to announce the #EclecticReaders next #authorinterview ! We talk to JD Lakey about the 1st book in her series (3 are out now) & have a great convo. It's a super fun & fast read (under 200 pgs) that kind of sets up the rest of the series. I can't wait to see what's going to happen next! Even if you haven't read the book I think you'll find the interview interesting, so I hope you'll check it out on 8/31 sunriserobot.net/eclecticreaders

This was an enjoyable and quick read! You follow a group of children who have just formed a pack in an otherworldly jungle-type world were the women have psychic abilities to help protect and guide their pack when outside their home domes. I'd recommend and plan on reading more of the series.

I'm now 87% through...there was something that happened and I couldn't put it down until I knew how it would be resolved. Really enjoying it!

About 30% through and so far it's a fast and enjoyable read. A sci-fi other-worldly setting where the women have special psychic powers and the main character's been assigned a black bead which has an ominous meaning. I'm not sure what the beads entail yet but I'm sure more will be revealed soon.
