Late in the Day: Poems 20102014 | Ursula K. Le Guin
10 posts | 5 read | 21 to read
"There is no writer with an imagination as forceful and delicate as Ursula K. Le Guin's." Grace Paley Late in the Day, Ursula K. Le Guin's new collection of poems (20102014) seeks meaning in an ever-connected world. In part evocative of Neruda's Odes to Common Things and Mary Oliver's poetic guides to the natural world, Le Guin's latest give voice to objects that may not speak a human language but communicate with us nevertheless through and about the seasonal rhythms of the earth, the minute and the vast, the ordinary and the mythological. As Le Guin herself states, "science explicates, poetry implicates." Accordingly, this immersive, tender collection implicates us (in the best sense) in a subjectivity of everyday objects and occurrences. Deceptively simple in form, the poems stand as an invitation both to dive deep and to step outside of ourselves and our common narratives. The poems are bookended with two short essays, "Deep in Admiration" and "Some Thoughts on Form, Free Form, Free Verse."

#Hymn

Did you know that Le Guin wrote poetry? She published several books of poetry in addition to her novels. This is one of my favorites of hers.

DivineDiana I did not. 😮 3y

#Hymn to Time by Ursula K. Le Guin. A reminder to celebrate "the shining, the seeing,/the dark abounding."

Thanks for hosting #poetrymatters @TheSpineView. It's been a while since I did a monthly challenge but I've enjoyed the daily ritual of finding a poem for each prompt. ✨

TheSpineView I love being the host and reading all the great poems! Thanks for playing along!😍 3y

Thanks for making me aware of this one @DivaDiane it‘s definitely worth sharing!

Here‘s the link to learn more: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/896286441/ursula-k-le-guin-a-poets-legacy

DivaDiane I am sure they will be inundated with backers. They‘ve reached 50% of their goal after only 2 days! We‘ll see what they do with it. I know that their costs are much higher than the goal though. Thanks for sharing! (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivaDiane You‘re welcome. Probably it will help them to see the market for interested buyers too, the level of interest, etc. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivaDiane And you‘re more than welcome, thanks for sharing with us! 6y
tournevis They are not being very reasonable with non-US shipping. 25U$ for shipping on one single 25U$ book to Canada, even one by LeGuin, they must be sniffing glue. I'll buy it used next year. 6y

I think most people know I‘m a huge fan of Ursula K. LeGuin and I think I‘ve interested a couple people here in her work.

There‘s a kickstarter that just started to publish her last collection of poetry “So Far So Good.” The publisher is Copper Canyon Press and they are a non-profit poetry publisher.

Go here to support them: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/896286441/ursula-k-le-guin-a-poets-legacy

We need the languages of both science and poetry to save us from merely stockpiling endless "information" that fails to inform our ignorance or our irresponsibility.

Chessa Oh my god, I *love* that! Alright, you've sold me: adding this to the TBR! 8y
DivaDiane She is so wise and has such a gentle yet firm way of expressing herself. I adored this book! 7y

Ursula le Guin says "science explicates, poetry implicates." A great collection of new poems and two short essays. A must read!
