This reprint is a more attractive volume than White's Book of Beasts (now out of print), largely because of the 136 colour illuminations alongside the text from the thirteenth century Bestiary (MS Bodley 764) in the Bodleian Library. The book cleverly reproduces the illuminations to the same size and in the same place as the original manuscript, with Barber's enjoyable translation fitted around them.

Pickpick

At once a natural history, a source of moral guidance for sinful Christians, and a treatise on the mystical significance of the beasts (some familiar, some utterly fantastical) included, this English translation of a thirteenth century manuscript provides a fascinating insight into the Medieval mindset. And the plentiful illustrations are just a treat!

Have you ever seen a manticore, dear Littens? No?
I think I like his hat best; who's to say a manticore can't be a stylish fellow?

MayJasper Has he got a leg in his mouth? 7y
quietlycuriouskate @MayJasper He has. He may know how to accessorise but his table manners are deplorable: he eats people. 7y
Balibee146 That beard is nudging towards hipster though.... 7y

Andrea4 I don't read about manticores often and yet today I've read about them twice now! 7y
quietlycuriouskate @Balibee146 In later editions the picture shows him serving that leg in a jar. 7y
quietlycuriouskate @Andrea4 A two-manticore day?! 7y
Balibee146 Definitive then! 😃 7y

Have you ever wondered how badgers dig out their setts? I can't wait to see footage of this on the next Springwatch.

tea.n.books Is that really how they do that?? That seems so intense!! 7y
quietlycuriouskate @tea.n.books Maybe it was a long day in the scriptorium... or they sneaked out for Happy Hour at the local tavern and things got out of hand. 7y
