If, like me, all steampunk is starting to feel a little same-y to you, I'd recommend giving Gunpowder Alchemy a shot. It's set in China, and centers on themes of family, loyalty, Imperialism, and tradition vs innovation. There's adventure, peril, and a hint of romance (but not Romance, if you catch my drift) that takes second place to the action in the story. I've already bought the sequel and I'm looking forward to having the chance to read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. When it comes to romance and steampunk, I am exceptionally picky. However, the description for this book caught my attention and I'm happy I gave it a try.

The world building and historical references were fantastic, and the character building is excellently done. Of course the bigger plot(s) aren't wrapped up until the next book, but there wasn't a moment's hesitation in buying book two.

What I should be reading vs reality. It's Friday. I don't want to study for work stuff, I want to go adventuring!

By the way: I totally adore Gunpowder Alchemy. I'm on the final stretch so hopefully it ends well (I'm confident it will).

Confession: in general, I am not a fan of the romance genre and I tend to avoid it for the most part. However, I stumbled across this book and the story grabbed me.

Wish me luck!

Steampunk-y book set in China where gunpowder has been used in engines. This book takes place during the Opium Wars in China and deals with empire, British colonization, Opium addiction, family and more. Great adventure with a really great protagonist.

I haven't read much #steampunk but I loved loved loved this book set in China during the opium wars. I knew Jeannie Lin first as a romance author. There is a romance side plot in this one, but the focus is on Jin Soling's steampunk adventure, when she is pulled into Imperial intrigue several years after her engineer father was made a scapegoat for a military loss and executed. #seasonsreadings2016
