In 1842, the gunpowder might of China’s Qing Dynasty fell to Britain’s steam engines. Furious, the Emperor ordered the death of his engineers—and killed China’s best chance of fighting back…Since her father’s execution eight years ago, Jin Soling kept her family from falling into poverty. But her meager savings are running out, leaving her with no choice but to sell the last of her father’s possessions—her last memento of him.Only, while attempting to find a buyer, Soling is caught and brought before the Crown Prince. Unlike his father, the Emperor, the Prince knows that the only chance of expelling the English invaders is to once again unite China’s cleverest minds to create fantastic weapons. He also realizes that Soling is the one person who could convince her father’s former allies—many who have turned rebel—to once again work for the Empire. He promises to restore her family name if she’ll help him in his cause. But after the betrayal of her family all those years ago, Soling is unsure if she can trust anyone in the Forbidden City—even if her heart is longing to believe in the engineer with a hidden past who was once meant to be her husband…Includes a preview of the second book in the Gunpowder Chronicles.Praise for Jeannie Lin and her novels“Tantalizing.”—Publishers Weekly“Compelling, memorable.”—Library Journal“[Lin] is an exceptional storyteller.”—RT Book ReviewsUSA Today bestselling author Jeannie Lin grew up fascinated with stories of Western epic fantasy, Eastern martial arts adventures, and romance novels. Pickpick

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. When it comes to romance and steampunk, I am exceptionally picky. However, the description for this book caught my attention and I'm happy I gave it a try.

The world building and historical references were fantastic, and the character building is excellently done. Of course the bigger plot(s) aren't wrapped up until the next book, but there wasn't a moment's hesitation in buying book two.

What I should be reading vs reality. It's Friday. I don't want to study for work stuff, I want to go adventuring!

By the way: I totally adore Gunpowder Alchemy. I'm on the final stretch so hopefully it ends well (I'm confident it will).

Confession: in general, I am not a fan of the romance genre and I tend to avoid it for the most part. However, I stumbled across this book and the story grabbed me.

Wish me luck!

Steampunk-y book set in China where gunpowder has been used in engines. This book takes place during the Opium Wars in China and deals with empire, British colonization, Opium addiction, family and more. Great adventure with a really great protagonist.

I haven't read much #steampunk but I loved loved loved this book set in China during the opium wars. I knew Jeannie Lin first as a romance author. There is a romance side plot in this one, but the focus is on Jin Soling's steampunk adventure, when she is pulled into Imperial intrigue several years after her engineer father was made a scapegoat for a military loss and executed. #seasonsreadings2016
