Do They Hear You When You Cry
Do They Hear You When You Cry | Fauziya Kassindja
5 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
A true story of persecution, friendship, and ultimate triumph, Do They Hear You When You Cry chronicles the struggles of two extraordinary women: Fauziya Kassindja, who fled her African homeland to escape female genital mutilation only to be locked up in American prisons for sixteen months; and Layli Miller Bashir, a driven young law student who fought for Fauziya's freedom. Here, for the first time, is Fauziya's dramatic personal story, told in her own words, vividly detailing her life as a young woman in Togo and her nightmarish day-to-day existence in U.S. prisons. It is a story of faith and freedom, courage and inspiration.

Pickpick

#readingaroundtheworld #Togo My December Book on Togo did give me an intimate glimpse of life in a small tribal town in that African country. However, the story is largely the drama of a young girl running away from a forced polygamous marriage to an old man and from the FGM he insisted upon. Most of the book details the horrors of the US immigration detention system which treats asylum seekers like criminals and her lawyers fight to free her.

rockpools I‘m glad it was a pick! Hoping to read this in the quiet days after Christmas (cos they exist, don‘t they?!) 4y

I don't really have books about innocence, but I do have a lot about the loss of it. This is on my TBR pile about a girl who is being forced to go through female genital mutilation. It's about fighting to maintain her innocence and while I'm sure this will not be an easy book to handle, I have a feeling this will be required reading. #memoir #innocence #augustphotochallenge #augustofbooks
