On the Natural History of Destruction
On the Natural History of Destruction | W.G. Sebald
2 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
W. G. Sebald completed this extraordinary, important and controversial book before his untimely death in December 2001. It is a harrowing study of the devastation of German cities by Allied bombardment in World War II, and an examination of the silence in German literature and culture about this unprecedented trauma. On the Natural History of Destruction is an essential and deeply relevant study of war and society, suffering and amnesia. Like Sebalds novels, it is studded with meticulous observation, moments of black humour, and throughout, the authors unmatched intelligence and humanity. From the Trade Paperback edition.

During WWII, an estimated 600,000 German civilians were killed by bombings. Here are some essays on victimhood. I'm interested in reading this someday. #Essays #NoteworthyNovember

Pickpick

In this collection of essays Sebald addresses the German literary response (or lack thereof) to the destruction of the Second World War. In the title essay he explores the silence surrounding the devastating Allied bombing and unlocks the many reasons for this silence, shame, fatalism the real inability to remember, interrogate or adequately express memory 👇

Moray_Reads It is difficult, revelatory and important writing, not least because this final dubious chapter of the war is given little attention on the UK either. The other essays really require a deeper knowledge of German literature than I possess but the broad strokes of the legacy of the war in German writing is still fascinating even if some of the detail was lost on me 7y
