Heir Apparent
Heir Apparent | Vivian Vande Velde
6 posts | 19 read | 6 to read
In the virtual reality game Heir Apparent, there are way too many ways to get killed--and Giannine seems to be finding them all. Which is a darn shame, because unless she can get the magic ring, locate the stolen treasure, answer the dwarf's dumb riddles, impress the head-chopping statue, charm the army of ghosts, fend off the barbarians, and defeat the man-eating dragon, she'll never win. And she has to, because losing means she'll die--for real this time.

This was a fun video game fantasy adventure story. It was picked for my irl bookclub by my partner, an old favorite of his. Giannine gets stuck in a virtual reality game and must win before time runs out or she'll die in real life. She encounters all kinds of riddles and challenges as her character fulfills her role as the new heir to the kingdom and is constantly getting killed and having to start over. It was silly and enjoyable

Day 26 of #riotgrams calls for backlist / old books that rock. Heir Apparent has been one of my favourite YA SFF novels for around a dozen years. I still have my original copy and reread it when I feel the need.

My sister is 19 years younger than me. I affectionately refer to her & her new husband as “the kids”. I may have posted this picture already, but the newlyweds came to mind for #KidsInLove.

My sister likes to read Vivian Vande Velde. She suggests Heir Apparent.

I first read Heir Apparent in middle school, and it has been a personal favourite ever since. A land of both virtual reality games and protesting parents is one too much like our own to seem fictional, but the story is too fantastical to not be enjoyed.

Cinfhen Enjoying your reviews😊💚 7y

I'm hoping the video game theme in "Heir Apparent" will make a nice crossover for Minecraft fans. I should probably ask if these kids still enjoy getting books as gifts but I never remember until it's down to the wire. (And I'm not really sorry about it!) #Christmasgifts

OK STORY TIME‼️I was going to use Armada for this one since it's probably the only gaming book that I actually own but I didn't really like it (I only got a chapter in and it was boring ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) BUT then I remembered this gem! I read it ages ago but it started a short & intense Vivian Vanne Velde obsession in like 8th grade? Maybe 9th. But she ends up in the video game and basically living her best life, likely with a hot guy (deets are fuzzy)

MeganB Annnnnd I ran out space for the tag!smh #octphotochallenge @LibrarianRyan 8y
LibrarianRyan This looks fun. Try listening to Armada. It gets way more entertaining after chapter 2. Plus Will Wheaton reads it. 8y
MeganB @LibrarianRyan i just couldn't get past the "and now I will read you my dad's diary" info dump. Like, dude, really? Plus, I think to appreciate Ernest Cline at all I would have to have some nostalgia for the 80s and I...just...don't. Idk, Ready Player One didn't really work for me either. Think it's just one of those things. 8y

TirzahPrice My favorite Vivian Vande Velde book!! And I suspect we must be around the same age because I remember going through an intense Vivian Vande Velde phase in middle school. 8y
MeganB @TirzahPrice I headed straight for the end of the ya section (w-z) for a solid month or so! My favorite was the one where she finds glasses on her sidewalk that just happen to fit her god awful prescription (much like my own eyes 😂). I can't remember the title though! 8y
TirzahPrice I don't remember that one! But I read and loved the vampire one, where a girl meets a dangerous vampire in a laundromat and he kidnaps her... 8y
