How the Mind Works
How the Mind Works | Steven Pinker
10 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 12 to read
A model of scientific writing: erudite, witty, and clear. New York Review of Books In this Pulitzer Prize finalist and national bestseller, one of the world's leading cognitive scientists tackles the workings of the human mind. What makes us rationaland why are we so often irrational? How do we see in three dimensions? What makes us happy, afraid, angry, disgusted, or sexually aroused? Why do we fall in love? And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness? ?How the Mind Works? synthesizes the most satisfying explanations of our mental life from cognitive science, evolutionary biology, and other fields to explain what the mind is, how it evolved, and how it allows us to see, think, feel, laugh, interact, enjoy the arts, and contemplate the mysteries of life. This new edition of Pinker's bold and buoyant classic is updated with a new foreword by the author.

I‘m 70% through the tagged book (requires quiet and concentration, neither of which I have in abundance). Might start one of the others today. Raven‘s Shadow is my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks . And, naturally, I have a few more in the wings if I finish these or need something different. Looking forward to #24B4Monday with the always awesome hosts @Andrew65 @SumisBooks @jb72

Andrew65 Good luck with the Readathon and on finding that quiet contemplation time! 👍😊 (edited) 4d
TheAromaofBooks It's impossible to have too many books waiting in the wings!! 3d

Book synchronicity - today I started my #bookspin, The Happy Kid Handbook (which is not going so well, TBH). I‘ve been plugging away at the tagged book since January, and just got to this section. Now to see if they complement, contradict, or have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

#JumpStart2020 wrapup: of my original stack I finished the five marked books. I am about 40% into the tagged book, which I knew would go slowly. Didn‘t get to the Briggs. I also read two Nancy Drews with the kiddo, for a total of seven finished. It‘s been a tough month for me, very busy momming and there‘s no let-up in sight. Hoping to get some reading done while traveling this next week.

Thanks to @Lizpixie @Clwojick for hosting!

Nikki_E Dicey‘s Song (and Homecoming) were faves when I was growing up. 1mo
ravenlee @Nikki_E I love both of them and have read them many times. I am trying to continue the series, but I stalled early on the last time I tried the next book. Fingers crossed for this next try! 1mo
Clwojick Thanks for joining! ♥️ 1mo

“Indeed, a mind that passively accepted ambient memes would be a sitting duck for exploitation by others and would have quickly been selected against.”

Election tampering via social media, anyone?

Pinker is discussing memes as ideas. This book is from 1997. Given what we now call memes, this is wildly apt.

So that‘s where the whole “meme” thing came from. I learned something today.
