The Glass-Blowers
The Glass-Blowers | Daphne Du Maurier
5 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
"The Glass-Blowers consistently entertains." --New York Times The world of the glass-blowers has its own traditions, it's own language - and its own rules. 'If you marry into glass' Pierre Labbe warns his daughter, 'you will say goodbye to everything familiar, and enter a closed world'. But crashing into this world comes the violence and terror of the French Revolution, against which the family struggles to survive. Years later, Sophie Duval reveals to her long-lost nephew the tragic story of a family of master craftsmen in eighteenth-century France. Drawing on her own family's tale of tradition and sorrow, Daphne du Maurier weaves an unforgettable saga of beauty, war, and family.

“A glass-blower, remember, breathes life into a vessel, giving it shape and form and sometimes beauty; but he can, with that same breath, shatter and destroy it.”

#BadandBoujee ...oh boy, another hard one! But, my mind leaped to the French Revolution (don‘t ask me how, just go with it), which led me to Google books. I had no idea Daphne De Maurier wrote a novel set during the French Revolution, let alone a novel based on her family‘s history. Here it is! #aprella

Mdargusch I didn‘t either! Thanks for posting about it because now I need to read this! 6y
Librarybelle @Mdargusch I know what you mean. I think I need to get my hands on a copy of this too! 6y

Friends of the Library book sale #bookhaul, post 2

I picked up The Book of Ruth and the woman next to me almost immediately said, “Oh, that‘s such a good book!” I love recommendations from strangers, even when I don‘t end up loving the book.

ephemeralwaltz That Oscar Wilde!😍😍 6y
saresmoore @ephemeralwaltz They has several of those beautiful gilded, leather-bound classics. I had to practice restraint and leave some for the other patrons! 6y
LeahBergen I love the ICL (International Collector‘s Library) editions. 👏🏻👏🏻 6y

The Gothic, Horror, and Heyer scores. If you are a big fan of Victoria Holt, Helen MacInnis, and Phyllis A. Whitney make a trip to World Mission Thrift in Lansing, Michigan. Their book section is huge. It takes up more than a quarter of the shop. The book section even has comfy chairs to sit in.

[DELETED] 2232195534 Love these! I see at least three very familiar covers from reading in my younger days. Gothic was my favorite at that time. 😀 8y
quirkyreader @kaysreadinglife Gothics and Horror have always been the major genres that my family has read. I like getting the older editions of books because of the interesting cover art. 8y
LeahBergen I am a HUGE Georgette Heyer fan and collect the old hardcovers when I can find them. And like you... I love the old cover art. ❤️ 8y
