Loving My Actual Life
Loving My Actual Life: An Experiment in Relishing What's Right in Front of Me | Alexandra Kuykendall
2 posts | 5 read | 33 to read
Feel Satisfied with Who and Where You Are In a world of comparison and discontent, it can feel impossible to be happy with life as we know it. Other people seem to have it all together, to be finding success, to be having more fun. But we weren't meant for a life characterized by dissatisfaction. In this entertaining and relatable book, Alexandra Kuykendall chronicles her nine-month experiment to rekindle her love of her ordinary "actual" life. After wiping her calendar as clean as a mother of four can, Kuykendall focuses on one aspect of her life each month, searching for ways to more fully enjoy her current season. By intentionally adding one thing each month that will make her jump for joy, she provides a practical challenge women can easily replicate. With humor, poignancy, and plenty of personal stories, Kuykendall weaves together spiritual themes and practical application into a holy self-awareness, showing women how a few small changes in their routines can improve their enjoyment of this crazy-busy life. Endorsement "If you ever get the chance to read anything written by Alexandra Kuykendall, take it. She is a gentle, trustworthy storyteller who lives the words she writes about."--Emily P. Freeman, author of Simply Tuesday

Pickpick

This was a steady and thoughtful read. I've read numerous books on habits and enjoying your life, but I especially liked that this book looks closely at the motivations behind what we do every day from a Christian perspective.

Laura317 I am on the lookout for this book based on your review. 8y
SheReadsAndWrites I just started reading it too!! 8y
mcctrish I am wondering if Alexandra Kukendall is related to Carol Kukendall who write for Guide Posts? 8y

This is basically the Christian version of The Happiness Project. Some is repetition, but liking the insights into the author's thought-process from this perspective.

MrBook Nice pic! 😊👍🏻 8y
rabbitprincess Pretty mug! 8y
LauraBeth I like Gretchen Rubin but I feel like all she does is take Biblical principals and package them into a secular way (if that makes sense) for folks who would never go near Christianity. 8y

BookishMarginalia Lovely cover! 8y
annahenke @LauraBeth I love Gretchen Rubin's books. I guess what you're saying depends on what you define as biblical. A lot of common sense and "living well" principles coincide with Christian ideals, so you could say that. What I like about this Kuykendall book, though, is that it's overt. There are Bible verses and the motives of why you're choosing these actions/habits are clearly expressed from that viewpoint. ? 8y
WordWaller That cover is gorgeous but screams Pinterest to me XD reminds me of that one book similar... One Thousand Gifts? Ann Voskamp 8y
LauraBeth That's true - most living well principles coincide with Christian ideals. I'll check out the Kuykendall book 😀 8y
annahenke @LauraBeth let me know your thoughts! 😊 8y
annahenke @WordWaller I haven't read the Voskamp, but it's on my list to check out. I've heard great things! 8y
Chessa @LauraBeth Christian *principles* are fairly universal, I think. I mean, you could find a lot of overlap with Buddhist principles, for example. It's the metaphysics where folks diverge. So it makes sense to me to have different books to appeal to different people in that regard. 8y
LauraBeth You're exactly right @Chessa - I should have framed what I said in a better way as I didn't mean to offend anyone and I do see that what I said sounds sophomoric 8y
Chessa @LauraBeth no offense taken on my part! I'm married to a philosopher, so I like these kinds of convos. 👍 8y
annahenke Very astutely put, @Chessa 8y
