The ratings are real. One number, 0 to 100, determines your place in society. Earn a high rating, and the world is yours for the taking. But fall to zero, and you may as well cease to exist. Societies thrive on order, and the Rating System is the ultimate symbol of organized social mobility. The higher it soars, the more valued you are. The lower it plummets, the harder you must work to improve yourself. For the students at the prestigious Maplethorpe Academy, every single thing they do is reflected in their ratings, updated daily and available for all to see. But when an act of vandalism sullies the front doors of the school, it sets off a chain reaction that will shake the lives of six special students -- and the world beyond.

Another book down Rated was not at all what I anticipated, but I‘ve had it for a year so I‘m glad to have read it #thingsincommon

I‘ve recently changed up how I rate my books, and I was curious as to how every one else choses their star ratings.

Previously, if I enjoyed a book it would get 5 stars. If i didn‘t it would get 1 star. Very extreme. 😂 I‘ve since changed it up to be the following:

1⭐️ Bailed/ should have bailed
2⭐️ Meh/ Disappointing
3⭐️ Good
4🌟 Great/ I loved it
5🌟Amazing/ Unforgettable

Sargar114 This is about what I‘m at too. I generally think also that if I find a grammatical or editing error hat it can‘t be a 5, but sometimes even that changes depending on how good the story is. 4y
AlaMich Do you use half stars? I‘m an indecisive Libra and often can‘t commit to whole number ratings. 🤓 4y
Deblovestoread This how I rate books and @AlaMich I do use 1/2🌟, especially 3 1/2 and 4 1/2. 😀 (edited) 4y

amywithbooks My ratings are pretty similar! 4y
reading_rainbow this is exactly how my ratings are as well. 4y
Clwojick @AlaMich @Kdgordon88 I agree with the 4.5 rating. Sometimes a book is soooo close to being a 5, but it‘s just not there. Since I only use goodreads and Litsy to rate, I generally end up rounding down... since they don‘t have half star options. If I‘m making a note in my bullet journal, I‘ll do half stars. Though it‘s only really 4.5 that I feel the need to give or take that extra little bit. 4y
AllisonM89 Mine are close to yours, but four is good and three is fine/indifferent 4y
Twainy Similar but I would give star fractions as sometimes it‘s better than great & less than perfect? I give zero stars to a DNF as I‘m really not rating the entire book, for all I know it becomes a 5star in the next chapter? But I definitely can say that what I have read was crap. 😆 4y
AmyK1 Mine are pretty similar to yours. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Mine are pretty similar to yours - sometimes I use “would I reread this?“ as a way to help me rate a book & my system is definitely a 7-step one as I frequently rate books either 3.5 or 4.5. 1* is “Why did I even finish this train wreck??“ 2* is “I really, really thought this was going to get better and it just didn't“ OR “this was okay and then went off the rails at the end.“ 3* is a solid meh, while 3.5* is “good for a one-time read.“ ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd because I'm so rambly haha) - 4* is “really enjoyable & can see myself rereading/finding other books this author wrote“ while 4.5* is “soooo close to perfect.“ 5* is, of course, awesome - a book I'm definitely planning to buy for my permanent collection so I can reread it again (and again). Even my star ratings are rambly! 😂 4y
Kimberlone My rating system is pretty similar, although 3 stars is the category with the most wiggle room. Sometimes I will use it for books that were just ok but weren‘t terrible but sometimes I will have to use it for books that are more of a so-so that would be 2.5 stars if given the option. I wish that Goodreads had a half star option mostly for those books in between 2-3 stars 4y
Bookwormjillk I start at 3 and either go up or down from there in 1/2 star increments. 3 is a good book- most books are 3‘s. 4 is really good, recommend strongly to others. 5 is really good, and would read again. I rarely finish anything that falls below 2 1/2. Great question! 4y
Crazeedi I love this post!! 4y
Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks you know I love your rambles hahahah 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 1. Trash 2. Something's lacking 3. Good. Not a raving review but if you're interested, it's worth a shot 4. Great with a few small apprehensions 5. Great all around. In hindsight, I tend to recommend the 4/4.5 rated books over some 5s. I'll use half stars here if I'm unsure. I'll round up if issues are a personal preference problem & round down if more of a plot/characterization issue. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m much the same. Anything above 3 gets a pick in Litsy. I also think 3 is a book I can see lots of people liking, even if it‘s not really my jam. 4y

Everything reflects on their rating to the students at Maplethorpe Academy. The system is updated continuously and anyone can see it. Bex, Tamsin, Noah, Hana, and Chase set off a chain reaction when they do an act of vandalism on the front doors and they're forced to face an unfair reality.

I choose this book because It talks about a school that works on an order, and that order works on the rating system which is the symbol of organized social life. The bigger the rating is the more valued you are. The lower it is the harder you must work to improve your rating.
