Poor Your Soulmoving, wise, and passionately writtenis a beautiful reflection on sexuality, free will, and the fierce bonds of family. At twenty-eight, Mira Ptacin discovered she was pregnant. Though it was unplanned, she embraced the idea of starting a family and became engaged to Andrew, the father. Five months later, an ultrasound revealed that her child would be born with a constellation of birth defects and no chance of survival outside the womb. Mira was given three options: terminate the pregnancy, induce early delivery, or wait and inevitably miscarry.Miras story is paired with that of her mother, who emigrated from Poland to the United States, and who also experienced grievous loss when her only son was killed by a drunk driver. These deftly interwoven stories offer a picture of mother and daughter finding strength in themselves and each other in the face of tragedy. From the Hardcover edition.

And a good book is essential for riding the subway in New York. There aren't enough published memoirs about abortion. It's important to share our stories with each other. #pooryoursoul #miraptacin #abortionstories #memoir

Pickpick

Best book I read in April. A sharp, powerful, feminist memoir about grief after Ptacin discovers that not only is she pregnant, but her baby has a multitude of fatal birth defects. Her story is bravely told and explores marriage, motherhood, abortion, and mental health issues. Go read this book! 💯 #ReadWomen

BookishFeminist @Orbeck33 Highly recommended- if I were pregnant or in the right before or after stages of pregnancy I would've had a hard time with this. It was great that she took a hard look at abortion because it isn't often discussed in detail, especially emotionally. 8y

But sorrow is less of a checklist, more like water. It's fluid, it has no set shape, never disappears, never ends. It doesn't go away. It just changes. It changes us. —Mira Ptacin #BookQuotes #ReadWomen
