The Morning Gift is a beautiful, classic romance from much loved author, Eva Ibbotson. Ruth lives in the beautiful city of Vienna and is wildly in love with Heini Radik, a brilliant young pianist. But her world is about to change forever. When Hitler's forces invade, Ruth's family flees to London, but she is unable to get a passport. Quin, a young professor and friend of the family, visits Ruth and, in an effort to bring her back to London, he offers a marriage of convenience. As Ruth throws herself into her London life, Quin begins to fall desperately in love with her. Things are further complicated by the arrival of Heini . . .

God, the miscommunication between Quin and Ruth always kills me. They could have been so happy so much earlier in the text! Ibbotson's narration is always a joy, though. #historicalromance #historicalfiction

I love Ibbotson's romances so damned much. This one, set right before WWII, is probably the darkest of the lot, but there's still plenty of enchantment alongside the horror. Both the refugees and the students foster strong communities, and the romance itself unfolds very much between the lines. We see the heroine & hero are perfect for each other because of who they are by themselves, not just because of their mutual attraction. It's glorious.

xicanti There are a LOT of wretched, unpleasant characters along the sidelines, though. In some cases, Ibbotson tells us they hold abhorrent views (like anti-Semitism or ethnocentrism), then shows us how they change. In others, the characters' vile ways never shift. 6y

I need to be upright for a little while (it's a pain day), so I've installed myself at the dining room table with my book, three shortbread fingers, two chocolates, and a cup of sweet almond green tea.

xicanti @cobwebmoth thanks! If things go as usual, I should be okay by tomorrow afternoon. 6y

Louise Do you struggle with chronic pain? If so, you are not alone! I do too. 💙 6y
xicanti @RebelReader thank you! 6y
xicanti @Louise I've got endometriosis, so there's at least one day per month where all I can do is take painkillers and stay either in bed or in an extremely reclined recliner. The pain's become more manageable since I accepted this, but it's a major productivity killer and it's hard on my neck. Thank goodness for books and TV, which help distract me. 6y
EllanaRose I have chronic pain too and it sucks. I hope you feel better soon, or it at least becomes manageable. Hugs and spoons 6y
Louise @xicanti and @EllanaRose Yes, so much productivity lost to days when one is incapacitated by pain. Yet somehow, we find our way with each precious moment of wellness. Wishing us all lots of manageable and even pain-free days ahead! 😘 6y

I have to put this book face down whenever I take a break because the cover model's eyes follow you wherever you go and that always creeps me out. It's easier to ignore the four thumbnail-sized models who stare at me from the back cover.

Ibbotson's romances are the sort of thing I rec to people who think they dislike romance, but she DOES have a bit of a formula that includes a tedious (though not usually outright vile) fiancée. This time around, the attachment is on the woman's side.

I'm right on the edge of a pain day, so I'm using Eva Ibbotson as distraction-based pain relief.

The book's excellent so far, and I keep thinking how personal it must've been for Ibbotson. It's about a non-observant Jewish family who flees Austria when the Nazis take over; Ibbotson's own story, though I think I've read she was only two or three when her parents left, not 20 like the central character.

Foil accents are my favorite. As is anything this woman writes. However had I missed it until now?
