Harriet Gordon stumbles into a murderous web of stolen gems and cutthroat thieves as she runs from her tragic past in an enthralling new historical mystery series set in early twentieth century Singapore. Singapore 1910--Desperate for a fresh start and to distance herself from her tragic past, Harriet Gordon finds herself in Singapore at the height of colonial rule. Hoping to gain some financial independence, she advertises her services as a personal secretary. It is unfortunate that she should discover her first client, Sir Oswald Newbold--explorer, mine magnate and president of the exclusive Explorers and Geographers' Club--dead with a knife in his throat. When Inspector Robert Curran is put on the case, he realizes that he has an unusual witness in Harriet. Harriet's keen eye for detail and strong sense of duty interests him, as does her distrust of the police and her traumatic past, which she is at pains to keep secret from the gossips of Singapore society. When a second body is dragged from the canal, Harriet feels compelled to help with the case. She and Curran are soon drawn into a complex web of stolen gemstones and a mysterious gang of thieves who have no qualms about killing again to protect their secrets.

I loved the setting, the culture and the mystery. A very easy read and I will be picking up the rest in this series. Not quite a cozy mystery but close.

Impulse buy because of the cover. This one has been lingering on Mount TBR for awhile.

Good solid mystery. Surprises I didn't see coming. Writing makes the setting come alive. You can feel the stifling heat. Harriet the main female character has interesting backstory as suffragette.

Mostly a Pick but I have thoughts. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Main Male Character is likeable but time period is British Colonalism of Singapore. Early on it is repeatedly mentioned that Dective Curran has "gone native" and is in a relationship with his 'housekeeper' Li An. Hints of their story. In this first book Li An is just always at home with dinner waiting and ready for sex. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig This from the Author's notes
"I‘d like to give some context behind Curran and Li An‘s relationship. I want to be clear that Curran and Li An share a complex relationship borne of a mutual need and respect for each other. There is no implication intended that this is any sort of unequal relationship. Theirs is a genuine love affair cloaked in the veneer of what would be seen as acceptable to the society they inhabit." ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm curious to see where this series is heading. If Harriet and Curran remain just friends and colleagues with Harriet and Li An becoming friends
than I think it will be enjoyable. If it ends up with a love triangle than I'm out.

Highly recommend this mystery.Rich in historical detail during Britain‘s colonial rule of Singapore(1910).It‘s dank humidity, searing, heat, squishy mud, swarming mosquitoes, all contribute to the story‘s oppressive atmosphere. In contrast, the lush landscape sparkles when the sun returns. In an effort to escape her past, Harriet Gordon joins her minister brother in Singapore. Seeking to pay her way, she advertises ⬇️

kspenmoll her typing services. When she arrives at her new client‘s home, she discovers both he & his Burmese servant murdered. She becomes embroiled in the murder investigation with Inspector Robert Curran. Together they face the deceit & treachery of a “cabal”, a dangerous, ruthless, gang of sapphire & ruby thieves. Plot twists & surprises make this a taught, thrilling story. (edited) 3y

The book takes place in colonial Singapore, which is a really interesting time and place to set a historical mystery. Unfortunately I didn't really connect with the characters. This is a debut, so I would consider reading the next book in the series to see how the characters develop (but honestly mainly for the setting).

I went back to read this first in series after reading the second one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m glad I did as it was good to get the complete backstory of a widow who lost her husband and young son to typhus in India moving to her brother‘s school for boys in 1910 Singapore. Harriet discovers her employer‘s body and becomes involved with a local detective to sort out the mystery. She‘s a very interesting character, and I look forward to reading more. 4.25/5⭐️

A culturally rich historical mystery with a splash of romance! The writing clearly sets the stage & immerses the reader in colonial Singapore. I wasn‘t the biggest fan of Curran but he grew on me. I loved Harriet from the start! She was a fascinating character with a past that evoked a ton of sympathy from me. The entire cast of characters were well-developed and the mystery was one that is filled with suspense, intrigue, and is long reaching.
