Nancy Drew 54: The Strange Message in the Parchment
Nancy Drew 54: The Strange Message in the Parchment | Carolyn Keene
2 posts | 9 read | 1 to read
A sheep farmer receives a mysterious telephone call shortly after he buys a series of pictures painted on parchment. Decipher the message in the parchment and right a great wrong, the voice says. Puzzled, the owner asks Nancy to help. With Junie, his daughter, Nancy tracks down a kidnapper and a group of extortionists. Is there a connection between the message in the parchment and a boy artist on another farm? And who is responsible for the atmosphere of fear in the neighborhood? After several harrowing experiences, Nancy begins to tighten the net around a ruthless villain and calls on the assistance of her friends Ned, Burt, Dave, Bess and George to bring his nefarious scheme to a dead end.

Better than the previous Nancy, which isn‘t saying much. Decent story with some stretches. I‘m ready to finish the series and read something else, honestly.

Third finish of #24B4Monday has me just shy of my 10-hour goal and about 460 pages. I‘ll try to get another half hour-ish and/or 40 pages of whatever falls open next.

Andrew65 A great Readathon for you. 👏👏👏🙌🙌🎊 (edited) 4y
Hooked_on_books Sounds like you‘re a bit Nancied out! 4y
ravenlee @Hooked_on_books I am SOOO Nancied out! First time through we interspersed other books, but this has been a year and a half straight! But this is the penultimate installment, so it‘s time to power through so we can move on. 😆 4y

So, Nancy is visiting a friend on her family‘s sheep farm. Said friend is giving Nancy the tour and they‘ve just left the slaughterhouse for the stretching room when friend recites this creepy little poem. I lost it reading this out loud to my daughter. The whole thing was just gruesome and then this! I started laughing hysterically, crying and snorting. Turned the page to find Nancy‘s reply (in comments)

ravenlee Junie had a little lamb/it really got her goat/when Daddy took the pet away/and made her friend a sheepskin coat! Oh my god, I had to put the book down I was crying and laughing so hard. WTF? 4y
Hooked_on_books Wow! My jaw is on the floor. 😲😆 4y
TheAromaofBooks That is FANTASTIC 4y
ravenlee @Hooked_on_books I‘m so traumatized by the whole thing. First a tour of the slaughterhouse, in a MG book? That‘s awful enough. But then this poetry stuff...definitely hysterics were warranted. I‘m almost afraid to continue the book. I honestly have zero memory of reading this the first time (which was only 3-4 years ago). Guess I repressed it! 😂 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Lol, I would have laughed from horror and surprise also. Farm life... 4y
