Not until 2009 did the WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) receive recognition when they were finally awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal. As volunteers shuttling planes during WWII, they did not receive veterans' status until 30 years later (and that over objection of the American Legion). They paid for their own pilots license training, uniforms, and funerals. More than 1000 served. 38 were killed. (cont.)

lynneamch I listened to Fanny Flagg's novel right after Flight Girls having no idea that the topic was the same highly recommend both. 9mo
Prairiegirl_reading Fannie Flagg is an auto-buy author for me but I don‘t always get to them right away. I‘ve had this one for years. This my sign to get to it! 😄 9mo
UwannaPublishme Love all of Fannie‘s books too and this one was one of my all-time favorites. 🙌🏻 9mo

Mehso-so

This is more of a romance with WWII as a backdrop than it is historical fiction about the impressive Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Aside from giving the book credit for sending me down an interesting google rabbit hole, I was disappointed. Even the cover is misleading, aside from one supporting character (Caroline) to the MC (Audrey) other named women are underdeveloped and seem to serve as means to describe tragedies Audrey escapes.

Pickpick

A beautifully written first book for Noelle Salazar on a piece of history that has been for the most part, lost in history. A powerful story of the courage by the Women Airforce Service Pilots during WWII. There is even an emotional love story woven into the book.
