Suddenly, a Knock on the Door
Suddenly, a Knock on the Door: Stories | Etgar Keret
8 posts | 12 read | 12 to read
Bringing up a child, lying to the boss, placing an order in a fast-food restaurant: in Etgar Keret's new collection, daily life is complicated, dangerous, and full of yearning. In his most playful and most mature work yet, the living and the dead, silent children and talking animals, dreams and waking life coexist in an uneasy world. Overflowing with absurdity, humor, sadness, and compassion, the tales in Suddenly, a Knock on the Door establish Etgar Keretdeclared a "genius" by The New York Timesas one of the most original writers of his generation.

Mehso-so

I enjoyed these quirky and often strange stories. However, most of them were very brief and felt like vignettes rather than actual stories, leaving me feeling somewhat unsatisfied with them..

Second book finished for the #AwesomeApril readathon! @Andrew65

This review is for Keret‘s short story “One Gram Short” translated by Nathan Englander and day 10 of the Advent Calendar Short Story collection. The narrator needs to impress a girl so seeks one gram of weed from his friend Avri. Avri knows a lawyer who gets medicinal weed- lawyer agrees to part with some but only for a favor to show how they are true friends. Interesting story from this Israeli author.

Soubhiville I‘ve never heard of this! I love that title! 6y
saresmoore I don‘t think I‘d heard of any of your seven favorites! And we‘ve talked about books so much over these last couple of years. I love it. Thank you for sharing! 6y
vivastory @Soubhiville There was an interesting adaptation of his short story Wristcutters. Tom Waits was in it. 6y
vivastory @saresmoore Thanks! I intentionally selected books that I've not posted about. It was a little challenging 😂 6y
Soubhiville @vivastory oh I‘ve seen that! I loved it! I also love the Gogol Bordello song from it. 6y

#RiotGrams Day 6: I learned about Etgar Keret when I listened to his magnificence during the #SingaporeWritersFestival2017 - I immediately ordered all his #ShortStory collections I can find via Book Dep. I hope to read them this year. I wish.

"A cigarette lighter, a cough drop, a postage stamp, a slightly bent cigarette, a toothpick, a handkerchief, a pen, two five-shekel coins." This is the beginning of a two page short story.

An impressive collection of blurbs, but I think the prize for most hyperbolic blurb of the last five thousand years goes to Gary Shteyngart.

LectricSheep Did you see the NPR article on blurbing that @v_cuev posted about?! It talks about Gary Shteyngart's hyperbolic blurbs. 😁 7y
Marchpane @LectricSheep I was vaguely aware that he was a prolific blurber, but hadn't seen the article. Thanks @v_cuev ! 7y
Arbol Now I want to know - do you get paid for blurring? Is it like when you're an actor and start doing commercials for Capital One or State Farm? 7y

Marchpane @Arbol I've always assumed authors did it as kind of a professional favour, but honestly I have no idea. It would be interesting to know more about it. 7y
Merethebookgal 😂👍 7y
merelybookish I always thought it was more like a favour for publishers, editors, agents... 7y

More like 50 shades of white.

Marchpane I'm a huge Etgar Keret fan, his short stories are weird but captivating 😊 8y
GuiltyFeat @Marchpane In that case you'll pleased to know that he signed this book for me after I heard him in conversation with Gary Shteyngart at the Jerusalem Writers' Festival a couple of years ago. 8y
Marchpane That's so cool!!! 8y
