Hive Mind
Hive Mind: How Your Nations IQ Matters So Much More Than Your Own | Garett Jones
1 post | 1 to read
Over the last few decades, economists and psychologists have quietly documented the many ways in which a person's IQ matters. But, research suggests that a nation's IQ matters so much more. As Garett Jones argues in Hive Mind, modest differences in national IQ can explain most cross-country inequalities. Whereas IQ scores do a moderately good job of predicting individual wages, information processing power, and brain size, a country's average score is a much stronger bellwether of its overall prosperity. Drawing on an expansive array of research from psychology, economics, management, and political science, Jones argues that intelligence and cognitive skill are significantly more important on a national level than on an individual one because they have "positive spillovers." On average, people who do better on standardized tests are more patient, more cooperative, and have better memories. As a result, these qualitiesand others necessary to take on the complexity of a modern economybecome more prevalent in a society as national test scores rise. What's more, when we are surrounded by slightly more patient, informed, and cooperative neighbors we take on these qualities a bit more ourselves. In other words, the worker bees in every nation create a "hive mind" with a power all its own. Once the hive is established, each individual has only a tiny impact on his or her own life. Jones makes the case that, through better nutrition and schooling, we can raise IQ, thereby fostering higher savings rates, more productive teams, and more effective bureaucracies. After demonstrating how test scores that matter little for individuals can mean a world of difference for nations, the book leaves readers with policy-oriented conclusions and hopeful speculation: Whether we lift up the bottom through changing the nature of work, institutional improvements, or freer immigration, it is possible that this period of massive global inequality will be a short season by the standards of human history if we raise our global IQ.

Ok hive mind- question. Is there a smart watch/fitness tracker that will let me listen to audiobooks offline?

Hestapleton My Fitbit Versa (original) does NOT. Though it does have Spotify but I haven‘t tried listening to audiobooks through it that way. 3y
Megabooks You can download audible books to my Apple Watch SE and listen with earbuds. 3y
Megabooks But it‘s just audible (not library books, Chirp, etc). Unsure about Apple audiobooks because I don‘t own any. 3y

BethM @Megabooks and probably not scribd then either? 3y
Megabooks @BethM no, unfortunately. There‘s not a scribd app for watch as far as I know. There has to be an independent app on the watch for it to work. (the way audible, Spotify, etc. make a specific watch app.) 3y
Avanders So… it looks like Megabooks is way more informed about this… but I would add just a couple thoughts as a new Apple Watch (series 3) owner. 1 - it might be possible to “mirror” the app‘s treatment on your watch of an app on your phone BUT 2 - dude, it will drain your battery and eat up your memory. I have like *nothing* on my watch, and I can‘t even do updates Bc there‘s not enough room. Serious design flaw imho. Maybe later series are better? 3y
Avanders But you *can* download books to your phone and use Bluetooth headphones to listen offline. Is the issue wanting to go out without your phone, though? 3y
BethM @Avanders well that‘s irritating. Yeah it would just be nice to not have to carry my phone with me to listen. Although I guess if I could control the app on the watch and leave the phone in my pocket or something that would be ok. 3y
Avanders @BethM yeah - I do that with calls and texts, and do appreciate the convenience 😁 Did you google the question? You may find some help or good advice there too.. 3y
BethM @Avanders I did to mixed answers. Seems as though you may be able to do so with audible or Apple Books but other apps become a grey area. 3y
