I liked Aina, she was somehow so easy to relate to. There were also several morally grey characters and I always love those ones.

I really loved the world, it was ugly but so believable.

Writing felt sometimes too repetitive: there were some thoughts that narrator pondered several times and it felt a bit too much sometimes. But there was really hilarious banter as well.

This was really action-packed.

I found this book to be too unrealistic. (Excluding the fantasy and dystopian elements, of course.) I mean, a girl who‘s been training to be an assassin for only six years can throw knives, shoot a dart gun and a regular gun, and never miss? Impossible. And that “fantasy” element was nonexistent.

“Good things don‘t happen to girls who come from nothing.” This quote really hit a turning point in the book for me because it made me feel she was giving up and wanted to let go after failing her mission to kill the Hirais brothers. Now she has a bounty on her head and no one trusts her! It‘s been a really good book so far! ;)

Cfischbuch You‘ve made a terrific connection between the quote and what‘s to come for the character. I love it when that happens. 4y

I was just unable to suspend disbelief when the main character, a (regular sized) teenage female assassin killed a guard and then ... "She lifted the body upward and then, straining under the man's dead weight, managed to stand on top of the desk while carrying him. She lifted the body and tossed it over the wall..."
I was just: nope. It could just be me but I was promised magic and I wasn't feeling it. #catsoflitsy

"?????????, ??? ???? ?? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ??????????."⁣

A fun fantasy about a teen who was raised to be an assassin after being orphaned young. I really enjoyed that the magic aspect wasn't hugely important to the plot, making it feel more real. I also liked the lack of a romantic plotline. It was pure action & violence, with a slight hint of politics & historical fiction.

Loved the worldbuilding and the character development. Aina makes for a badass protagonist, and her arc through this story felt very real to me. I‘m not sold on this as a potential series. I felt one of the bad guys getting away didn‘t fit, and that this book might have been stronger as a stand-alone.

Been reading DIAMOND CITY on audiobook, and I‘m digging it. I‘m finding a growing love for fantasy that doesn‘t settle for a Tolkien-style setting and goes for something more urban and modern like Flores does with this book. I also like that Aina is unapologetically hard and vicious. #audiobook

This was a multifaceted, well-written, action packed ride. I thought it was going to be a quick and easy read, but it wasn't. I enjoyed the character development, but sometimes the story was so detailed that it bogged down the pace a tad. I wasn't fond of the timeline transitions as a few were abrupt. I really liked the smart, sassy, and strong-willed main character. Thank you to Netgalley and goodreads for granting me an ARC to review.
