Marian Anderson went against all odds of her times and became a huge success for her singing voice. This book shows the life story of Marian and her struggles and triumphs of how she became the voice of the twentieth century. This picture book biography is one that shouldn't be missed.

This book was published in 2002 and is a biography. The book is about a little girl who goes through her life of singing, but also mentions and emphasizes the hardships that she goes through in her life. One of them being her father passing away.
Aside from this, the book has beautiful illustrations and story telling. The songs that were sung by Marian are in the book and italicized so one is able to really read and interpret the songs sung.

em_lemo A saying that I really enjoyed in this book was one that went like this:
“Marian knew about prejudice. She had seen the trolley drive past her family as they stood at the corner.“
I liked this line because it showed the hardships and the time in which this woman, and her family was growing. I think that having these details gives the reader more insight.

When Marian Sang by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This book was about Marian and her love to sing. The illustrations are big and in brown and black dark colors. It talked about the prejudice Marian had to go through and how unfair things were because of the color of her skin. Marian finally achieved her dreams and sang in front of lots of people . She sang for kings, and queens, presidents and prime ministers, famous composers and conductors.

I love Selznick‘s illustrations they are so gorgeous. this story ties together the pain and struggle she had to go through to become a singer. It is diverse and a story of persistance.
