When Marian Sang: The True Recital of Marian Anderson: True Recital of Marian Anderson, the | Pam Munoz Ryan
56 posts | 22 read | 2 to read
A harmonious introduction to one of our country's most important singers--as envisioned by two of our industry's most important voices. Wide trade & institutional appeal. Marian Anderson is best known for her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, which drew an integrated crowd of 75,000 people in pre-Civil Rights America. While this momentous event showcased the uniqueness of her voice, the strength of her character, & the struggles of the times in which she lived, it is only part of her story. Like the operatic arias Marian would come to sing, Ryan's text is as moving as a libretto, & Selznick's pictures as exquisitely detailed & elaborately designed as a stage set. What emerges most profoundly from their shared vision is a role model of courage.

This book was published in 2002 and is a biography. The book is about a little girl who goes through her life of singing, but also mentions and emphasizes the hardships that she goes through in her life. One of them being her father passing away.
Aside from this, the book has beautiful illustrations and story telling. The songs that were sung by Marian are in the book and italicized so one is able to really read and interpret the songs sung.

em_lemo A saying that I really enjoyed in this book was one that went like this:
“Marian knew about prejudice. She had seen the trolley drive past her family as they stood at the corner.“
I liked this line because it showed the hardships and the time in which this woman, and her family was growing. I think that having these details gives the reader more insight.
