Tuf Voyaging | George R. R. Martin
14 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
Long before A Game of Thrones became an international phenomenon, #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin had taken his loyal readers across the cosmos. Now back in print after almost ten years, Tuf Voyaging is the story of quirky and endearing Haviland Tuf, an unlikely hero just trying to do right by the galaxy, one planet at a time. Haviland Tuf is an honest space-trader who likes cats. So how is it that, in competition with the worst villains the universe has to offer, he's become the proud owner of a seedship, the last remnant of Earth's legendary Ecological Engineering Corps? Never mind; just be thankful that the most powerful weapon in human space is in good hands--hands which now have the godlike ability to control the genetic material of thousands of outlandish creatures. Armed with this unique equipment, Tuf is set to tackle the problems that human settlers have created in colonizing far-flung worlds: hosts of hostile monsters, a population hooked on procreation, a dictator who unleashes plagues to get his own way . . . and in every case, the only thing that stands between the colonists and disaster is Tuf's ingenuity--and his reputation as a man of integrity in a universe of rogues. "A rich blend of adventure, humor, compassion and all the other things that make being human worthwhile."--Analog "A new facet of Martin's manysided talent."--Asimov's

What a read! I tried before to read the Game of Thrones series by Martin and didn‘t honestly like his writing. I was honestly nervous when the book club suggested this book but have been pleasantly surprised by the story and the writing that was done for this book. Stories of space voyages, ecological engineering, and most importantly cats!

Finally managed to cross off all my read books for the #BookSpinBingo and got two Bingos by now. Yey!

Still need to finish my Rome book for the normal #BookSpin, but that won't be a problem. Therefore, I will now go and make my list for the next round.

1) I'm between books at the moment & I'm not sure what I want to read next...🤔📚😬📚
2) Fantasy! Although I do appreciate sci-fi from time to time & some of my favorite authors are known for their sci-fi publications (PK Dick, Cixin Liu, Le Guin)
3) Tagged. Highly recommend. A good example of Martin's talents beyond Song of Ice and Fire.

GreenGrl87 Tuf Voyaging was good, very interesting concept and host of characters I thought... and I believe it may have also been my last space read! 4y

This early Martin was an impulse buy at HPB couple of weeks ago & I'm glad I picked it up. Former trader turned ecological engineer Haviland Tuf becomes the sole human crew of a powerful spaceship with biological warfare & cloning capabilities. Haviland, & his beloved feline crew, zip through the Galaxy offering assistance to troubled planets. With his stoic calm, sarcastic banter & unflappable devotion to solutions I found this oddly comforting.

"All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." - Lord Acton

I loved that this saying was quoted so often during the book because it describes the message of the story perfectly.
