Oliver is a tabby cat who is always the center of attention. Marshmallow is a baby rabbit who moves into Oliver's home. At first Oliver does not welcome Marshmallow, but the little bunny's charms are impossible to resist. This is the true story of how Oliver and Marshmallow become friends. Clare Turlay Newberry's lifelong passions for cats and for drawing come together in this elegantly illustrated book, winner of the 1943 Caldecott Honor. Her legacy as an author of more than fifteen picture books, most of which feature cats, still endures.

“Soon Marshmallow began lolloping about the apartment, sniffing things, and then tasting them. And nearly everything seemed to taste pretty good.”

The characters are super cute and i‘m sure kids in a classroom would love to read this story with a partner and sound out the bigger words together.

The language is beautifully descriptive. I love how there was such depth to the cat‘s character. The illustrations made the animals look soft and lush.

Marshmallow is a Caldecott story written by Clare Turlay Newberry originally in 1942. The main characters are Oliver the cat and Marshmallow the bunny. This story is wonderful because it involves many little poems throughout the book.

Marshmallow by Clare Turlay Newberry is a Caledecott award honor F picture book that would be great for a CR (or at least some of the poems in it would be. Written from the perspective of a cat, this book is a cute story about what happens when a new pet bunny moves into an apartment. #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter You can find more information about this book at www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/marshmallow-by-clare-turlay-newberry/ 5y
alexandracarpenter This book would work great with UDL 1.2 - offer alternatives for auditory information, since it is told from the point of view of a cat but also through poems. 5y
alexandracarpenter It would also work great with ESOL 38 - assign short readings for homework since students can read the poems ahead of time before reading the whole story 5y
gnewman @alexandracarpenter I am an animal lover, so I have to read a book told from the perspective of a cat!! And, I love that it incorporates poems too! Thanks for sharing the resource so that I could read more about it!! Great choice! 5y

Oliver was scared of a little bunny! He just wanted to be at home.

The cat just wanted peace and quiet. He didn‘t know other animals existed! He cared about his food (mainly).
