Murasaki Shikibu's the Tale of Genji: Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations | Harold Bloom
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A book in the series Bloom's Modern Critical Views, a gathering of a representative selection of the best contemporary criticism of the poets, novelists, essayists, & playwrights of the Western world who are most widely studied & read. This volume discusses The Tale of Genji, written during the period of Heian Japan (794-1185) by a court lady, Murasaki Shikibu. The novel depicts courtly life in medieval Japan & spans about 70 years. The tale concerns Prince Genji & the many women he encounters -- their feelings, experiences, & fates -- as well as the lives of his children & grandchildren. The central work of Japanese literature, The Tale of Genji's universal themes of love, ambition, & resentment continue to attract modern readers all over the world.

Post 1 of 2; It seems we weren‘t the only ones to observe glimpses of homoeroticism in Kaoru.

Post 2 of 2; This essay from Doris G. Bargen compares the “Genji monogatari” & Proust‘s “A la recherche du temps perdu”, as well as the myth of Phaidra & Hippolytos. It‘s fascinating!

(Sorry if this is terribly hard to read.) #Genji

Daisey Thanks for sharing! 5y
Lindy This business of father-figure attachment was not on my radar when I was reading the Kaoru chapters #Genji, even though Genji‘s mother-figure attachment was clear in the early chapters. 5y

When my husband brought my hold home from the library, his comment was, “I don‘t think anyone has even opened this book before.” #daretobedifferent

Now that I‘ve finished The Tale of Genji, I‘m really looking forward to diving into these essays on the world‘s first novel. #Genji

Lindy You go! 5y
