Hood: A Novel | Emma Donoghue
9 posts | 13 read | 17 to read
A tale of grief and lust, frustration and hilarity, death and family Penelope OGrady and Cara Wall are risking disaster when, like teenagers in any intolerant time and placehere, a Dublin convent school in the late 1970sthey fall in love. Yet Cara, the free spirit, and Pen, the stoic, craft a bond so strong it seems as though nothing could sever it: not the bickering, not the secrets, not even Caras infidelities. But thirteen years on, a car crash kills Cara and rips the lid off Pens world. Pen is still in the closet, teaching at her old school, living under the roof of Caras gentle father, who thinks of her as his daughters friend. How can she survive widowhood without even daring to claim the word? Over the course of one surreal week of bereavement, she is battered by memories that range from the humiliating, to the exalted, to the erotic, to the funny. It will take Pen all her intelligence and wit to sort through her tumultuous past with Cara, and all the nerve she can muster to start remaking her life.

Bailedbailed

I haven‘t picked this up in a month, so I‘m afraid it‘s a bail. I usually like Emma Donoghue a lot, but the heaviness of the grief in Hood isn‘t what I want to read right now.

(This photo taken over a month ago, pretty much all my poor flowers have died after over 2 months of over 100 degrees and absolutely no rain. 😞 Someone do a rain dance for us?)

vlwelser That book is intense. I had to have a break from Emma after I read it. 2y

Book 81Hood is a well-written dive into the life of Pen, a Catholic school teacher in her early 30s, the week her girlfriend dies unexpectedly. Written in a day-of- the-week chapter format, from when she gets the call Sunday morning to when she goes to bed Saturday night, the format sets the book apart, as you see her grief unfolding. Themes of religion, homosexuality and being "out", and monogamy. Explicit at times. An enveloping read. 4.5 stars

Uhm. It was well written and I stuck it out. Some of the writing is beautiful, actually. It really is a good exploration of love and commitment and what that can look like. I just need a different kind of Emma Donaghue next, if I can say that without being offensive...

I forgot about a very important doctors appointment yesterday and had a small meltdown. Yay #spoonie problems. Anyway we went book shopping instead and I picked this up. Looks amazing and only 3$! #queerbooks

LiteraryinLawrence After being underwhelmed by a few post-Room books by this author, I was going to call it quits on her. But this premise sounds really good! 6y
tournevis Argh, I hate it when that happens to me. *Huggles* Also, books good. 6y
Jabberwocky @LiteraryinLititz I haven‘t actually read anything since room but I agree, I‘ve read less than great things about her other books. I‘ll let you know how this one goes 6y
Jabberwocky @tournevis Thank you 💖 The appt was on the 4th at five and I went on the 5th at four. It was frustrating through, they never did a confirmation call. 6y
tournevis @Jaberwocky Hoping you were able to reschedule. And they should have called. 6y

Mehso-so

I just found this book to really have no climactic points or excitement. It was heart felt and well written, but boring and I didn't ever really connect with or relate to/ like any of the characters by the end. I love this author, but this one wasn't for me.

"All the women I knew carried some kind of blade, though they were not all metal, or even visible."

brownekr Also interesting in this book: Pen has a number of casual nicknames (PenUltimate, PenDulous, etc.) that exactly mirror the style of affectionate nickname I found twee and trying-too-hard-to-write-for-kids in the Lottery family. But perhaps it's just a Donoghue *thing*? 7y

#literaryworldtrip Ireland

This novel takes place in only seven days and recounts how Penelope (short Pen) deals with the death of her longtime partner Cara, who died in an accident. The women had met during their school years in a Catholic school, where Pen still teaches and everyone believes that Cara was her flatmate. This book is packed with memorable characters and places (from the Catholic school to the Attic, a lesbian feminist commune).

whatthelog Wow that sounds interesting! Also I LOVE your tattoo!! 7y
half_book_and_co @whatthelog Thank you. It is just a temporary one 😎 It is by Tattify. 7y
Lindy This is still my favourite out of the many by Donoghue that I've read. 😊 7y
