Steve Hamilton amazes me. Every time I think he's going to zig he zags. Michael Connelly A gamechanger. Nick Mason is one of the best main characters I've read in years. Harlan Coben From "New York Times"-bestselling, two-time Edgar-award-winning author Steve Hamilton comes an unforgettable new hero, a man who will walk out of prison and into a harrowing double life that is anything but free. Nick Mason has already spent five years inside a maximum security prison when an offer comes that will grant his release twenty years early. He accepts -- but the deal comes with a terrible price. Now, back on the streets, Nick Mason has a new house, a new car, money to burn, and a beautiful roommate. He s returned to society, but he's still a prisoner. Whenever his cell phone rings, day or night, Nick must answer it and follow whatever order he is given. It s the deal he made with Darius Cole, a criminal mastermind serving a double-life term who runs an empire from his prison cell. Forced to commit increasingly more dangerous crimes, hunted by the relentless detective who put him behind bars, and desperate to go straight and rebuild his life with his daughter and ex-wife, Nick will ultimately have to risk everything his family, his sanity, and even his life to finally break free."

This is a good time travel book. The perspective is aggressively straight, white male and there are shifts in narration that can be confusing but I did find it quite enjoyable and a speedy read , even so. 4/5.

Kind of boring, very macho book where women exist only to be saved or for sex.

After seeing Don Winslow recommend this several times on twitter I finally grabbed it at the library last weekend and it did not disappoint. I read it in one afternoon. Nick Mason is a great new character, I'm looking forward to see what direction this series goes in next!

"Nick Mason" is about the worst name for a convict turned samurai assassin that I can think of.

The speed with which Mason becomes a ruthless killer in order to ensure he can see his wife and child combined with the speed with which he gives them up and starts a relationship with another civilian is a bit daft. But I'm nitpicking. Perfectly acceptable read for lazing on the couch.

I've liked everything else by Steve Hamilton, so why not this?

When you get mixed up with a #dangeroustype you never really know what's going to happen next. That's one of the lessons Nick Mason learns in this gritty thriller. It's the June selection for mystery #bookclub and I read it in two days! #rockinmay

Cinfhen I love me a good thriller 😉 7y

Most cops know how to follow criminals. Only a select few of them are good at following money.

A fun fast-paced thriller with a seriously flawed hero - making him all the more interesting to get to know.

Breezed right through this excellent story on audio. Loved Ray Porter as the narrator. If you like Lee Child or Don Winslow, you'll love Steve Hamilton. 🔪🔫💰⚖

brendanmleonard Been meaning to check this out - I love the comparison to those authors. 8y
Suzze Great start to his new series. But I do so hope he gets back to Alex McKnight too, as I adore him! 8y
NatalieR @Suzze Good to know you like his previous work. This is my first book of his. 8y
Suzze @NatalieR Much slower paced, set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. 8y

Fun for what it is--- a fast-paced thriller. The quintessential summer beach read. 👙🕶👣🐠🐟🐡🐬🐳

MrBook I enjoy a good thriller! 8y
alisahar @MrBook It's probably a little grittier and gloomier than the usual beach read but a good crime thriller. 8y

Tissue thin characters and kind of predictable but still it works. Perfect road trip listening. I'll be back for the next one in the series.

Read on Mr. King's recommendation. Loved it. I can't wait to see the movie. Please don't let Ben Affleck land the role!
