On Writing | Eudora Welty
7 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
Eudora Welty was one of the twentieth century’s greatest literary figures. For as long as students have been studying her fiction as literature, writers have been looking to her to answer the profound questions of what makes a story good, a novel successful, a writer an artist. On Writing presents the answers in seven concise chapters discussing the subjects most important to the narrative craft, and which every fiction writer should know, such as place, voice, memory, and language. But even more important is what Welty calls “the mystery” of fiction writing—how the writer assembles language and ideas to create a work of art. Originally part of her larger work The Eye of the Story but never before published in a stand- alone volume, On Writing is a handbook every fiction writer, whether novice or master, should keep within arm’s reach. Like The Elements of Style, On Writing is concise and fundamental, authoritative and timeless—as was Eudora Welty herself. From the Hardcover edition.

I wrote an extra long letter to make up for it‘s lateness. #litsypenpals 💕

kaysworld1 I love writing letters. I write to my Nanna twice a month. I did have pen pals but they always seemed to die out shame really I loved it all. 😊 6y
CareBear @kaysworld1 you can write to me if you‘d like. We can email for a bit first and see how that works out. I‘ve had 5 Litsy pen pals and my first three died out too but I have loved exchanging with the two I have now. 6y
kaysworld1 @CareBear oh that would be brilliant 😀 6y

It's always a bit of an adventure to go back and read authors' earlier works after reading their more recent books. It's interesting to see which habits they have held onto and how their voices have changed or improved as the their bodies of work increase.

Pickpick

"Art, though, is never the voice of a country; it is an even more precious thing, the voice of an individual, doing its best to speak, not comfort of any sort, but truth. And the art that speaks it most unmistakably, most directly, most variously, most fully, is fiction; in particular, the novel."
