Just Above My Head
Just Above My Head | James Baldwin
12 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
James Baldwin first wrote about homosexuality in his famous early novel, Giovannis Room. Here he brings homosexuality and race together in the story of the great gospel singer Arthur Montana. Arthur was found dead in the basement of a London pub at the age of thirty-nine, yet he lies on in this memoir. Written by Hall, his brother and manager, it is in part a subtle and moving study of the treacherous ebb and flow of memory. Set against a vividly drawn background of the civil rights movement of the sixties, Just Above My Head explores how Arthur discovers his love for Jimmy - 'with his smile like a lantern and a voice like Saturday nights - and portrays how profoundly racial politics can shape the private business of love.

Two brothers, one gay, one straight the moment when one asks the other about regret. Baldwin spins this moment out so big that it becomes a declaration of owning all that we are - the easily known parts of us and the hidden and inexplicable parts that take a long long time to know “When you sing” he said, suddenly, “you can‘t sing outside the song. You‘ve got to be the song you sing. You‘ve got to make a confession.”

What a joy to start an unknown novel by one of my favorite authors. I am so struck by Baldwin‘s grammar !! And I‘m not a grammar sorta person. But it strikes me that Emily Dickenson and James Baldwin have a lot in common.

Pickpick

So many novels that are written now are so incredibly narcissistic, that Baldwin‘s wide-ranging novel is a breath of fresh air. The story is a family epic of a sort that seems uncommon nowadays: Hall Montana tells the story of his brother Arthur, a famed gospel singer, and the stories of their friends and family. Homosexuality and racism are intertwined with Baldwin‘s signature meditations on the state of culture. Long, complex masterpiece.

"Love must be the rarest, most precious thing on earth, brother, where is it hiding?"

This book had me on a ride of a lifetime. I've never had such a hard time reading a novel, yet wanted to continue so bad in my life. James Baldwin never fails to amaze me with the talent he possessed in writing.
(I also took this book on the ride of it's life, hence its beat up looks ?)

"passion, apart from its tense relation to agony, labors beneath the shadow of death. Passion is terrifying, it can rock you, change you, bring your head under, as when a wind rises from the bottom of the sea, and you're out there in the craft of your mortality, alone."
