The Death of Johnny Ace
The Death of Johnny Ace | Steve Bergsman
3 posts | 1 read
R&B singer's life cut short too soon The tale of Johnny Ace starts in the late 1940s as a young man returns from the Navy to his hometown of Memphis to try and figure out what to do with his life. The man, Johnny Alexander, will eventually make his way to Beale Street, the epicenter of the blues culture in the United States, successfully launch his recording career as Johnny Ace, and battle against his record company, owned by African-American music mogul Don Robey. Along the way, he'll cross paths with musical giants such as B.B. King, Ike Turner, Bobby Bland, Roscoe Gordon, Johnny Otis, Junior Parker, Rufus Thomas and Big Mama Thornton. Eventually Johnny Ace works his way to the fateful concert in the Houston Auditorium, where a moment of violence ends his life. Did Johnny Ace think he could beat Russian roulette one more time? Or, did something else happen in that backstage dressing room crowded with girlfriends, record people, and a very angry Don Robey? The Death of Johnny Ace is based on the life of a real person, rhythm & blues singer Johnny Ace, whose meteoric career was cut short by his unexpected death. He allegedly blew his brains out playing Russian roulette just before he was to appear on stage at a Christmas concert in 1954. Although largely forgotten now, Johnny Ace was the biggest star in R&B, a teen idol, in the early 1950s.

Of course I‘m going to give a 👍👍👍 to One of my father-in-law‘s books! Even though this is fiction, I learned a lot about the early days of rock‘n‘roll, and how it was influenced by rhythm & blues and appropriated by white singers.

One more advanced #pop18 prompt to go! This fills #authorsharesyourname.

#BooksandDinner!!

Hubby is on call, so M and I are reading during dinner. ? Craving comfort food, but also trying to adhere to my post-Thanksgiving healthy eating plan, this is what I came up with. GF brown rice pasta, Aidell‘s chicken sausage, and sautéed kale in a vegan tomato basil pesto sauce.

Dairy, sugar and gluten free, and really really yummy!

The book is good too. ?? ? ?

Tamra Yum! Just what your week calls for too. 6y
saresmoore This is almost exactly what I have for dinner when I‘m craving comfort food! I love Aidell‘s. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sooooo ... are you related to the author of that book??? 6y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes!! It‘s my father-in-law! He‘s a journalist/travel writer turned book author. ☺️ 6y
alisiakae @saresmoore I love Aidell‘s too! I hardly ever eat pasta in any variety anymore, this was a treat! 6y
RaimeyGallant I'm cooking mostly vegan, dairy, and sugar free right now, too! Made a great ketchup tonight: tomato paste, quite a bit of apple sauce, water, vinegar, paprika, cloves, cinnamon. I didn't measure, just played around until it tasted good. 6y
RaimeyGallant Froze what we didn't eat, but should last 5-7 days in fridge. 6y
alisiakae @RaimeyGallant Yum! I buy Tessamae‘s ketchup, it‘s sweetened slightly with dates instead of sugar. I‘m not vegan, but I‘m cutting way back on dairy this month. 6y
RaimeyGallant Dates is a great idea! 6y

While reading one of my father-in-law‘s novels, I‘ve been discovering some fantastic 1950s era black artists that I had never heard of before. In our family, if you have a question about music, you go to Steve.

As long as I‘ve known him, he has been passionate about the early history of rock and roll and R&B. He wrote this book to try to bring more attention to a forgotten teen idol whose career was cut short under unclear circumstances.

CarolynM It's true. I would never have heard of Johnny Ace but for the Paul Simon song. 6y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage See this post for more info on my FIL/the author. 😃 6y
alisiakae @CarolynM And that song flew over my head until I started this book. 😳 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Very true—wonderful that your FIL has this mission! 6y
