The Falconer
The Falconer: A Novel | Dana Czapnik
13 posts | 13 read | 19 to read
A literary page-turner brimming with intelligence, energy, and wit, centered on an unforgettable young heroine that will thrill readers of all generations (Colum McCann). New York, 1993. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Adler, a street-smart, trash-talking baller, is often the only girl on the public courts. At turns quixotic and cynical, insecure and self-possessed, Lucy is in unrequited love with her best friend and pick-up teammate Percy, scion to a prominent New York family who insists he wishes to resist upper crust fate. As she navigates this complex relationship with all its youthful heartache, Lucy is seduced by a different kind of lifeone less consumed by conventional success and the approval of men. A pair of provocative female artists living in what remains of New Yorks bohemia invite her into their world, but soon even their paradise begins to show cracks. Told in vibrant, quicksilver prose, The Falconer is a wholly original coming-of-age story (Chloe Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists), providing a snapshot of the city and America through the eyes of the children of the baby boomers grappling with privilege and the fading of radical hopes. New York Times bestselling author Claire Messud calls The Falconer an exhilarating debut, adding that Dana Czapniks frank heroine has a voice, and a perspective, you wont soon forget.

Early 1990‘s New York: 17 year old Lucy‘s passion is basketball, and she knows she‘s better than most of the boys. There‘s a hella lot more to her;finely drawn portrait of a young girl growing into an understanding of what love demands, life choices, awareness of how women must navigate the world. New York is key, with characters that offer the diversity that is the city. I‘d be so glad to meet the woman Lucy will become. Fierce and wise.

“As the doors close, he grips the same pole I‘m holding for balance...With each lurch of the train, his grip loosens and his hand moves closer to mine. We touch and then don‘t. Touch and then don‘t. Always just barely.”

Mehso-so

The story of a high school girl coming of age in New York City in the mid-nineties was a nostalgic setting for me. There are also certain lines and moments that were poignant, but overall the existential ponderings felt heavy-handed and pretentious. Simone de Beauvoir this, Camus that. Sigh. And the journey overall wasn‘t satisfying or profound. Ultimately forgettable. #ARC
