Goodbye Freddie Mercury
Goodbye Freddie Mercury | Nadia Akbar
4 posts | 1 read
Lahore is burning. General elections are right around the corner. The summer city rages with the drug-fuelled parties of the oblivious, the rich and famous, while campaign posters and rally cries dominate the airwaves. Bugsy, rock RJ and host of the nation's top English radio show, is young and fabulous. Seeking more than wealth, fame and prestige, he performs a dangerous favour for an old friend that plunges him into the dark recesses of desi politics. Nida, a young college student desperate to escape the oppressive atmosphere of her traditional family home and her conservative college, still mourning the death of her brother, throws herself recklessly into the drug-addled arms of Omer Ali, son of the prime minister's right-hand man. As Nida spirals into decadence and Bugsy descends into darkness, their paths cross and sparks begin to fly. Nadia Akbar's audacious debut has all the makings of a cult novel-parties, drugs, mysteries, love triangles, political intrigue and power struggles-but its lush, sexy writing has the assuredness and precision of the most acute style of our time. Told in alternating voices and brimming with sharp observation, Goodbye Freddie Mercury hits the rocks and trails atwist.

Still stewing over my recent read. Are we so inured to the everyday injustices and violence, so beyond hope that even Freddie Mercury can‘t fix? No. Not today. #ChannellingArya #DeathOnTwoLegs #ANightAtTheOpera #Queen

‘For me, living in Lahore, a lowly-rat RJ playing rock music to a few desperate lonely teenage boys, Freddie really lives, yaar. He was one of us and he wasn‘t broken. He did what he wanted, he told everyone—his family, the system, the class—to fuck off. He was gay, weird-looking and desi, and yet he was a righteous magnificent angel.‘ Broken or not, he Lived and continues to do so. #Queen #IWantToBreakFree #IWantItAll

Pickpick

This reads at a breakneck pace. Quite like the city it embodies. Right from the title, the cover to the first page and every one that comes after, sucks you in to the vortex of disparity in time, means, gender and the art of chugging along. Soul-crushing moments jostling ones that make you soar. If I had read this in college, I‘d be shook. #Booked2019 #MuslimAuthorOrMC

AppuNthebooks An Existential Crisis seems to be a right of passage. And this particular reading of two youngsters in a city and circumstance that‘s not hard to fathom, make it all the more relatable. That search for purpose, spiking interest in politics, moved enough to feel strongly but unsure you can do something to make a difference. The language is on point, the lead characters feel real. A fantastic read that stirs up old thoughts and notes to self. 5y

When the husband picks up an exciting read from the airport book store 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾 It‘s a standing request and he has never disappointed! The shelf dedicated to these picks deserve a separate post of their own. #FreddieMercury #Queen
