Before YouTube or even the trailers at the beginning of VHS tapes, movie posters were sometimes the only source of information a viewer had about the movie before going to see it. And perhaps no one understood this quite like Drew Struzan, who died yesterday. His name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Lucas, Spielberg, and Williams for his part in Indiana Jones, Star Wars, E.T, and more.

Cuilin Yes, he certainly created the “look” so that we knew what to expect. RIP 4d
TieDyeDude Video is of John Williams conducting the Raider's March from Indiana Jones! 4d
MemoirsForMe I didn‘t realize Drew designed all these iconic posters. Such a great loss to the industry. 3d

Pickpick

The artist behind some of the most iconic movie posters of all time shares his work, his process, and his frustrations. Some of the unused work was especially cool, including his work for Guillermo del Toro, which was never used.

vivastory What Del Toro film poster did he design? 7y
TieDyeDude @vivastory He did work for both Hellboy movies and Pan's Labyrinth. They can be found easily by a Google search 7y
vivastory Wow, those are amazing. I especially love the one for Pan's Labyrinth. A lot more intriguing than the rather generic poster they used. 7y
TieDyeDude @vivastory Drew comes off as a bit of a curmudgeon as he doesn't hide his contempt for Hollywood studios and "art" directors, but he is not wrong in claiming superiority over today's big head Photoshop jobs. He is very clear in differentiating his creative friends & fans and the suits that made the decisions. 7y

"They never asked me to [make the changes]. They changed the background colors, faded out the other players - I'd never do that. It devolved into a gang of floating heads with no humor. It looks as though Christopher Lloyd's hand is growing out of Danza's head. A disgrace."
