How to Weep in Public
How to Weep in Public: Feeble Offerings on Depression from One Who Knows | Jacqueline Novak
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
In her hilarious memoir-meets-guide-to-life, comedian (and depressed person) Jacqueline Novak reveals depressions hidden pleasures, advises readers on how to make most of a cat hair-covered life, and helps them summon the strength to shed that bathrobe and face the world. Exhausted? Rundown? Filled with a vague sense of ennui, an occasional twinge of regret, or a hell of a lot of mood stabilizers? Then this is the book for you. How to Weep in Public is both a tongue-in-cheek advice guide (from a person who has no business giving advice to anyone!) and one womans breathless journey to consistently put on pants, or at least get out of bed in the morning. Beginning with her earliest blue moments of infancy, and hop-scotching through her exploration of the world of pharmaceuticals, before bounding right back to her parents' couch, Jacqueline Novak will introduce you to the ABC's (Adderall! Benzos! Catatonia!) of depression and reveal, funnily enough, that a lot can happen even when you're standing still. Or, as it happens, lying down. Whether youre coping with the occasional down day, or thrive fully in Picassos blue period, How to Weep in Public is the perfect place to regroup between those nagging Tony Robbins tapes and that exhausting amount of Leaning In. So sit back, relax, and let Jacqueline Novak teach you how to carpe depressem with the rest of them.

Think of it this way: while most books on depression try to help you win the war, this one is merely a cigarette in the trenches.

She admits that she is the last person to be giving advice and yet she gives it on coping with depression. This is one of those memoirs that I'm drawn to and enjoy reading. Gives me hope and makes me feel less alone. Plus humor in depression is great (some times. Some times it masks far too much).

Mehso-so

I thought I'd find this interesting...after all, I'm a psychologist & suffer from depression myself. But...I didn't like it. I didn't find it funny. So...not the book for me!

However, that being said, I do think it's important that folks share their experiences of mental illnesses. It aids in understanding & reduces stigma. So I'm glad that she shared her experiences!

Wife Psych nurse here. I haven't read the book, but totally agree that experience of mental illness must be shared. Everyone knows someone who has it, or has experienced it themselves. Why do we keep hiding it?🤔 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Note to self...so happy I decided not to go to law school! (Not just joking here, it was a serious consideration for me at the time, but I opted to do something else) 8y
TheApesOfWrath @mllemay @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Worst three years of my life and I've never even used it. Went right into libraries and NEVER LOOKED BACK. 8y
mllemay @TheApesOfWrath worst three years of my life as well and I have no intention of practicing law ever. I work in human rights but my law degree barely gave me any knowledge about that so not super useful either lol. 8y
StephTKO BAHAHAHAHAHAHA 8y
StephTKO Oh, and yes, worst mistake I ever made. I wish I could go back in time and slap the shit out of my 20 year old self. 8y
TheApesOfWrath @BookishFeminist @mllemay Um, why are all my new best friends on Litsy? 8y
BookishFeminist @TheApesOfWrath @mllemay @StephTKO I know right?! There's literally a whole trove of former lawyers/law grads on here lmao 😭😂 We should form a club. 8y
StephTKO Unfortunately, I actually practice law. And everyday I dream of going back to school to get a masters in library sciences. 8y
mllemay @TheApesOfWrath @BookishFeminist @StephTKO seriously, it's such a great community here! I normally do not talk about that time in my life but finding all of you guys has definitely put me more at ease with my experience. Super thankful for all my new friends 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @mllemay @TheApesOfWrath @StephTKO Ditto & right back atcha! Law school was a dark time for me, so it's nice to have a safe place talk about it among the comfort of others who chose not to pursue it or wish they'd done something else. 😊 (Not to knock anyone seeing this who practices & enjoys it!) 8y
Laura317 Did the law thing (real estate) for 15 years. Hated it. Now I am happily under-employed. If I could turn back time... 8y
AmandaFields Ooh, hello fellow former lawyers! I am so much happier working in a public library than I was getting my law degree 👍 8y
