Interesting blend of western & fantasy, good world building & believable characters.
Izzy‘s parents left her in the Territory, their price to the person called the Devil. When she‘s 16, she‘s free and chooses to become the Left Hand. The devil apprentices her to a man who rides the road to learn about her new job and her new powers. She must stop a new evil and learn who she is.
3/5 stars, read for realistic trails with magic & legends

Mehso-so

First Western I've read. Loved the worldbuilding, and the characters, especially Farron. The plot had potential but ran slow which made it frusturating when not much was resolved.

This was a really wonderful book! It was an engrossing mystery and a magical realism/fantasy feel. It was my first foray into westerns and I‘ll definitely be picking up the rest of the series.

Finals are over, and I‘m 2/3 of the way to being a lawyer. 🙌 Enjoying alcohol, reading, and listening to the Capitals game on the radio as a celebration.

Reviewsbylola That looks yummy. 😍 6y

#5starTBRpredictions - what a fun idea! Books on your tbr that you think will be 5 ⭐. These are all on my tbr and I am pretty sure they're going to be amazing. Ancillary Justice is sort of a gimme here since it won like every award.
Though oddly enough none of these are at the top of my tbr in terms of what I'm going to read next.

I don't know if it's the American west, the writing, or what but while reading this book I keep thinking of Stephen King. And that's a good thing.

This is one of the best books I read last year. It is an exquistely written book set in an lush world. It is one of those books that you can reread again and again and everytime you read it you will discover something new.
The sequel is out in January. And I cannot wait until I can read it!

I really enjoyed this read. Isobel's journey to become the Devil's Hand was engaging, her development as a character was well-paced. The idea that the Devil ran the Wild West fairly so long as everyone played by his rules just delighted me. I'm looking forward to reading more in this world.

This book grabbed me and pulled me in. Despite not being a fan of Westerns, I liked the writing style, how the characters evolved over the story and the descriptions Gilman wrote without making things more graphic than they needed to be.

If you like Westerns and a sprinkling of genre, you will inhale this book. The story switches between 16 year old Izzy, the devil's new Left Hand, and Gabriel, her mentor on the road. The rich characters and history enhanced with some magic make this read pure awesome!

I've been craving some a good Western tale and decided to grab this off my shelf. Based on the first few pages, I have a suspicion this will turn into an all night read to finish.
