“While Omu‘s big fat pot of thick red stew was empty, her heart was full of happiness and love.”
The best part was the end when there was no stew left... I don‘t want to spoil the ending though.
This book is a Caldecott honor book. I loved this book because it shows the importance of sharing even when you have very little. This could be used to show children in the classroom that it is important to share or that it is better to give than to receive.
Coretta Scott King Award and Caldecott Honor Book. This book was wondfully written and illustrated. It was repetitive, but in a meaningful way. The illustrations were detailed, but simple. Everything about this book was perfect.
A Caldecott winning book is a super important lesson about how you achieve happiness by not having stuff, but having a full heart. Omu doesn‘t realize what she has until she is thanked, making this her best dinner she ever had!
“While Omu‘s big fat pot of stew was empty, her heart was full of happiness and love.”

Using acrylic paint, China markers, pastels, pattern paper, an old book clippings, the author has created collage illustrations that entertain young readers.
Omu is cooking a delicious, thick red stew for dinner. But when the neighbors come knocking, she gives away one bowl, then another, and tell her dinner is all gone. But there‘s a surprise waiting for her as the neighbors come back. Dinner is saved and everyone is grateful for their gifts.
The illustrations in this book look like they are from a scrapbook and like they were copied and pasted in a unique manner. I love this simple and textured look.
The tone in this book really helps you to feel like you are there. The sensory element is great and you can really sympathize with Omu.
