The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation)
The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics | Daniel James Brown
The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation. For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washingtons eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler. At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generationthe generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism. This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction. From the Hardcover edition.

#NFNov Documentary #4 complete
Based on the novel The Boys in the boat, the American Experience on PBS was very well done. They're we're interviews and archival footage.
I really want to read the book now.
#TIL Joe Rantz was left by his family as a young teen. He was forced to fend for himself several years, until his older brother took him in. A great story of how he overcame this and won a gold medal.

What I liked best about the book: information about the depression era of the Pacific North West, pictures included in the book, extraordinary detail by the author, getting to know the lives of the boys outside of rowing, and interweaving of the looming war in Germany. It took me a while to get into this book and sometimes my interest waxed and waned but overall I enjoyed the book. The last 25% was my favorite part and I liked how the book ended.

The Boys in the Boat, is a Washington State Book Award winner. The NF book follows nine boys on their journey to rowing for gold. Set in the Great Depression the boys are working toward the 1936 Olympics. This book would be great for a LC in higher grade levels. #ucflae3414su19

Awesome book!! I know nothing about rowing, but the race scenes in this book were high drama, the relationships between these young men amazing and the trauma Joe went through - I may have cried a few times. One of the best books I‘ve read in awhile - and completely unexpected. #nonfiction #audiobook

I don‘t care at all about sports or rowing, but I loved this book! I saw some people on here said they skipped the descriptions of the races, so I was expecting them to be super long and tedious to read, but actually I felt that reading about the races really helped illustrate the chemistry that developed between these athletes. As a professional musician, I was continually struck by how much elite rowing is like performing chamber music.

This is a so-so on the good end of so-so, but it just didn‘t really live up to the hype for me. I liked most of the personal stories but I got bored with all the actual boat racing. 😂

I really enjoyed their story and the story of their families, coaches, and boat designer. I didn‘t not enjoy the overly used details of rowing and started skipping over parts till the plot returned back to them.. Stuck somewhere between a Pick and a So-So Book, I‘ve decided it‘s definitely a pick because I fell in Love with These Boys and I‘m so glad their story lives on.. If this is ever made into a movie I would definitely have to go watch it

Reviewsbylola I felt the same way by the end. I was totally invested in the team. It was a very dense read though and I‘m not that interested in rowing. 1y
MoBee @Reviewsbylola Me either but now I at least have a respect for the sport, much harder and more complicated than I would‘ve thought but I fell for everyone one of those boys.. Love Joe and Joyce‘s love story as well 1y

Between a Pick and a So-so
Pick because it‘s very thorough; Brown sets the stage impeccably, bringing each character, each scene, each race to life. Like any good sports story, he invests you in the team. And the backdrop for this is the 1936 Olympics - Berlin, Hitler, right before WWII.
So-so because at times it‘s a little too-detailed. I was able to hang on, but as someone with no other interest in crew, it was tedious at times.

This story drew my attention, but it was the #Olympicsport prompt for #booked2018 that gave me the nudge to read it.

Wow. The whole story is so incredible and inspiring, but it is Joe Rantz's story that makes the book. All he overcame, just to survive - let alone become a champion oarsman, is inconceivable. And not only that, he was truly a good man. My heart broke through the 1st half, and I cried through the epilogue. A moving must-read.

It was a wonderful piece of history and as someone who cares deeply for the underdog it was quite satisfying. A great book to listen to. I had to laugh because the book was due and I had to make Edward Herrmann speak really fast. His rapid speech made the boat races even more thrilling. (Litsy doesn‘t like photos today.)

Don‘t hate me...#unpopularopinion time. This was so hard to get through for me. What I liked: the historical anecdotes cleverly placed throughout the book, as well as the “boys‘” stories. What I didn‘t like: the boat talk. Sorry, rowing isn‘t for me. I understand why the mechanics and the rowing terminology were discussed, but it didn‘t hold my interest.

This completes the #OlympicSport for #Booked2018 and #AboutSports for #LRC . #LRC2018

StephanieGeiser It didn‘t hold my interest either! I just couldn‘t get invested in the story so I bailed. 2y

emilyhaldi I can see why you had an issue with the technical parts, but the rest of the story won me over! 2y
Librarybelle @emilyhaldi I found the personal stories, especially Joe‘s, very moving. Between that and the historical content, I rated this a 3 on GR. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage No hate from me. My BIL raves about this one. But it was pretty flat for me. Good for you on finishing! Have fun with your personal readathon this weekend! 2y
Chronic_Reader I also rated the book so-so but for the opposite reasons 😂 As a collegiate coxswain, I only enjoyed the rowing parts and got bored with the history. Rowing requires an entirely new language/vocabulary that is hard to read if you haven‘t lived it. I was so confused with all the new words when I started the sport. 2y
Librarybelle @Chronic_Reader Rowing is a very different language and sounds like it takes much endurance and sacrifice. Awesome to you for living the sport...I do not have a single ounce of athletic ability in me, so I really appreciate the talent it takes for any sport. 🙂 2y
