Aranthur is a student. He showed a little magical talent, is studying at the local academy, and is nothing particularly special. Others are smarter. Others are more talented. Others are quicker to pick up techniques. But none of them are with him when he breaks his journey home for the holidays in an inn. None of them step in to help when a young woman is thrown off a passing stage coach into the deep snow at the side of the road. And none of them are drawn into a fight to protect her. One of the others might have realised she was manipulating him all along . . . A powerful story about beginnings, coming of age, and the way choosing to take one step towards violence can lead to a slippery and dangerous slope, this is an accomplished fantasy series driven by strong characters and fast-paced action. 'A stirring, gritty and at times quite brutal epic fantasy' Tor.com 'This series promises to be the standout epic fantasy for the ages' Fantasy Book Critic

With the memory of Hobb's Farseer trilogy still fresh in my mind, this suffers terribly in comparison. Not really my thing at all. While no-one likes info-dumps, endless mentions of names, places, concepts, events etc without any explanation or context gets boring & alienating. The sword fights were all too numerous & mind-numbingly detailed - again, boring. The plot is confused & confusing. Reminds me of The Name of the Wind - hated that too.

jillrhudy What can you do? Books influence books if you never stop reading. I think “Lonesome Dove“ stole about a star and a half from the book I read immediately after it. 4y

My haul from the #bnbookhaul sale, I went yesterday and honestly I was very disappointed with the selection. There was hardly any Adult fantasy included in the sale which sucked. But Cold Iron is one I have been wanting to read so I got lucky with that. Warrior of the Wild was a new release so I paid full price for that.

Pickpick

I am a huge fan of Cameron‘s Traitor Son Cycle, the first fantasy by a historical fiction writer. I loved that series, but Cold Iron, book one in Cameron‘s new fantasy series, may very well exceed it.
It is also a very different book, though, so click thru for my full thoughts. And this is a book that left with as many thoughts and feels as it did entertained.

Cold Iron combines a good bildungsroman, beginning with a chance encounter and cascading into a web of dramatic events which drive the maturation and formation of the central character, with a subtle narrative using a viewpoint on the outside of what is "really" going on, with the main action in the background. Plus plenty of action (especially swordfights), precise prose, careful worldbuilding, and interesting characters.
