6 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Penelope Thornton-McClure and her bookshop's ghost-in-residence Jack Shepard are back on a new case in this delightful paranormal mystery from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle. A big bestseller leads to small town trouble. Bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure didn't believe in ghosts, until she was haunted by the hard-boiled spirit of 1940s private investigator Jack Shepard. Now Jack is back on the job, and Pen is eternally grateful... After an elegant new customer has a breakdown in her shop, Penelope suspects there is something bogus behind the biggest bestseller of the year. This popular potboiler is so hot that folks in her tiny Rhode Island town are dying to read it--literally. First one customer turns up dead, followed by another mysterious fatality connected to the book, which Pen discovers is more than just fiction. Now, with the help of her gumshoe ghost, Pen must solve the real-life cold case behind the bogus bestseller before the killer closes the book on her.

The 6th book in the series. I really enjoy this series. It is a cozy mystery with a very unique premise of a 1940s detective ghost who haunts our MC and helps her with solving the crime. There is also his ability to pull her back in time, while dreaming, to events that happened in his life. #TBRreads

Widowed by suicide, Pen moved to a small RI town to join her aunt in running a bookstore. A PI was killed in the store in the 40s, and his ghost is in residence. Pen investigates mysteries with his help, and the help of friends.

Trippy - Pen converses with the ghost, Jack, in her head. Jack can pull her into dreams of his creation, based on past cases, where they enact scenes. Pen appears to be forming an amorous relationship with a ghost. 🤔

tdrosebud I've really enjoyed this series, though I still need to read this one. Maybe I'll grab it on my way to work this morning... 4y
mabell @tdrosebud This is the first I‘ve read in the series, but it wasn‘t too difficult to get to know the characters and setting. The premise is certainly unique! And this one is a pretty good mystery! I‘m looking forward to seeing how you think it compares to the others in the series! 4y
tdrosebud @mabell This is the 6th in the series, the first 5 are under the name Alice Kimberly. There was a lot of time between the 5th book and this one. The unique premise is what drew me into it too, it's so different from other cozies I've read. 4y

mabell @tdrosebud I was familiar with The name Cleo Coyle, but I didn‘t realize it was a pseudonym for a husband/wife duo. That‘s cool! 4y
mabell @Chrissyreadit Pretty unique 😄 I‘m always intrigued by the interesting storylines originated by cozy mystery authors. I read one which was based on an “emergency” bakery in a old ambulance. Haha. 4y

I like “we‘re here to serve them, not judge them.” 😊😊😊

I liked the newest entry in this series. Pen is a modern bookseller teaming up with the ghost of a hard boiled detective from the 1940‘s to solve crime in her small town. The Shades of Leather bestseller subplot was well done.
