The Vagabond
The Vagabond | Colette
7 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
From the author of Gigi comes this tale of 33-year-old Rene Nr, recently divorced and seeking a new life as a vaudeville performer. Maxime, a wealthy playboy, tempts her from the path of independence with the comforts of love and marriage. From the physical and psychological distance of a provincial tour, Rene reflects upon the conflicting needs of security and freedom. "The Vagabond, one of the first and best feminist novels ever written, is that rare thing: a great book which is also inspiring," declared Erica Jong. This vivid portrait of life in the Parisian music halls of the early twentieth century was drawn from the author's personal experiences. Colette's 1910 novel mirrors her own adventures as an itinerant dancer as well as her struggles to maintain a balance between social respectability and artistic freedom. This edition features an authoritative new translation of her story as well as an informative Introduction by Stanley Appelbaum.

Ireland is in the midst of the most snow we've had since "The Big Snow" of 2010. The city has shut down, everyone has been sent home from work, no public transport is in operation and there's a national bread shortage. So naturally I'm holed up The Vagabond and living my best life ????

Tamra It‘s like a national holiday! 👏🏾 Lucky you! 6y
Leannr @Tamra everyone's delighted 😂🙌🏻 fingers crossed it lasts for a few days! 6y
Libby1 Are they calling it The Beast from the East down there? 6y

Mehso-so

My irl #feministbookclub pick. A slow read that I skimmed in parts. Section 3 where Renee struggles between companionship, love, and her career in vaudeville and chance to travel was the most interesting section. Also fun to read about the vaudeville life and her partnership with Brague who acts in the show with her. Note: most of my book club liked this more than me. Honestly I think I‘ve been too tired to focus on more difficult reads.

Pickpick

Love the imagery in this book, and the overall story. The last portion devolves into letters she was writing, which I wasn't overly fond of. Aside from that, I really enjoyed this story.
