Though the Great War has ended, Bess Crawford finds herself caught in deadly circumstances on a remote Welsh headland in this tenth entry from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author. The fighting has ended, the Armistice signed, but the war has left wounds that are still agonizingly raw. Battlefield Nurse Bess Crawford has been assigned to a clinic for amputees, and the Welsh patients worry her. She does her best to help them, but it's clear that they have nothing to go home to, in a valley where only the fit can work in the coal pits. When they are released, she fears that peace will do what war couldn't--take their lives.Their officer, Captain Williams, writes to describe their despair, and his own at trying to save his men. Bess feels compelled to look into their situation, but the Army and the clinic can do nothing. Requesting leave, she quietly travels to Wales, and that bleak coal mining village, but she is too late.Captain Williams' sister tells Bess he has left the valley. Bess is afraid he intends to kill himself. She follows him to an isolated, storm-battered peninsula--a harsh and forgotten place where secrets and death go hand in hand. Deserted by her frightened driver, Bess is stranded among strangers suspicious of outsiders. She quickly discovers these villagers are hiding something, and she's learned too much to be allowed to leave. What's more, no one in England knows where she is.Why is there no Constable out here? And who is the mysterious Ellen? Captain Williams and his brother's widow are her only allies, and Bess must take care not to put them at risk as she tries to find answers. But there is a murderer here who is driven to kill again and again. And the next person in his sights is Simon Brandon, searching for Bess and unaware of his danger. . . .

This one was GOOD - more of a dark mystery than those that went before. Just one more in this series - I'll miss Bess. 😔

⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

MallenNC I‘ve been meaning to start this series! 4y

It was so great to get back into this series thru my #doublespin . I had forgotten how much I had missed Bess and her adventures. While this one did not boast a lot of “action”, there was a “creepy”, dark edge to it that I thoroughly loved. I found myself hating to put it down.
The war has recently ended, but Bess is still nursing soldiers and takes a leave to a remote location to check up on some Welsh former patients she feared were giving ⬇️

robinb up hope as they were returning home in their minds as “broken” men. There‘s isolation, buried treasure, greed, a menacing and eccentric group of villagers and more than one mystery to solve here. And while I didn‘t miss the lack of “action”, I did think it could have been a bit less lengthy with a little more time spent with the wrap-up. Still loved it! 4.5/5⭐️ @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks This book gave me all the feels! I thought it did such an amazing job looking at the hardship facing these broken men as they tried to go home, back to work they could no longer do. Such tragedy! But I think these books do a really excellent job of not sounding hopeless, which is why I keep reading them. 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks so true! There were some really heartbreaking scenes at the clinic when they were all still together as a unit. Such a tragedy to see who and what they faced as they left there too. These books don‘t sugarcoat the bleakness of that wartime...they simply state the harsh reality of it. 4y

TheAromaofBooks I think that's why I have stayed engaged with the series even after the war is over - I wasn't sure how they were going to continue plotting murder mysteries after the armistice, but honestly the setting has been SO good with the post-war books! There wasn't really a true victory at the end of WWI - just a slow, grinding stop to the killing. The men going home would never truly recover - so sad to think about. 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I had wondered if they would continue with the series following the war. I‘m happy for each and every one. 😊 I always hate to see a favorite series end. It‘s like losing good friends. 😔 4y
TheAromaofBooks I know!! And now I definitely need to read their other series, which I understand is also set during WWI. The latest Bess Crawford book was just published in 2019 so I'm hoping that they are planning to continue for a while, especially since the most recent book hinted at the romance between Bess & Simon that we've all been hoping for. 😁 4y

robinb @TheAromaofBooks YAY!!! 🎉🎉 I had about given up on anything there! 😩🤷🏻‍♀️ Talk about stretching it out!! 😆 4y
TheAromaofBooks RIGHT?! I have shipped them from the very beginning and F I N A L L Y there is a HINT that something may happen SOMEDAY! 😂 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I ❤️ your HINT and SOMEDAY!!! 🤣🤣🙄 I‘ll add a COME ON ALREADY to that!! 😩😩 Even I have a huge crush on Simon🙋🏻‍♀️...seriously Bess?! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks I do think it's a little funny - I wonder if they originally planned for Simon to become a love interest because it felt like he was older in the first book... and then became younger as the series went on haha But yes, he's such a dish! I don't know how she can resist! 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I wondered that too...I can‘t remember the age difference? I kept waffling back and forth thinking is he supposed to be the protective “older brother” or a love interest...especially when they introduced possible other love interests. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Nute Nice review! I also enjoyed the conversation between you and @TheAromaofBooks. You all put this book on my heart radar! Thanks! 4y
robinb @Nute thanks! I have really enjoyed the entire series and recommend starting at the beginning if you haven‘t read any. 😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Nute - yes!! If you like historical mysteries, this is a great series to read. But like Robin said, I would definitely start at the beginning, as the stories do move through time. Hope you enjoy them!! 4y

I wasn't sure if these books would be as good when WWI was over, since the setting has been a big part of why this series has been so enjoyable. However, this may have been my favorite so far. The authors do an amazing job capturing the aftermath of the war - not the glorious triumph imagined, but the reality of a generation of men left dead and maimed; women battered and bitter. The search for hope and a new normal is a big part of this story.

I‘ve liked the Bess Crawford series, but I generally prefer the authors' other series featuring Inspector Rutledge. (Part of that is that it‘s always a bit contrived to try and get a nurse involved in mysteries.)

A Forgotten Place is set mostly in Wales where Bess has gone to check on one of her former patients. While the setting was intriguing , and I did like some of the characters, I wasn‘t particularly interested in the central mystery.

I am a long time fan of the Bess Crawford series but this book became more like walking in concrete mid way through. The premise was interesting but the flow of the novel was off and the secondary characters were dull and predictable.

This was a good mystery, one of their best that doesn't take place on the Front. Bess is stranded in a remote Welsh village after checking up on a former patient. There is a conspiracy of silence - but about what? And why are all these strange things happening on the beach?

When a series is established w/a nurse who solves mysteries during WWI, and then the books go on long enough to find the war at an end you wonder how it will all continue; but we forget about the aftermath, that just because the bullets have stopped flying doesn't mean that the impact of war has disappeared. Bess' story continues when she's inadvertently trapped in an isolated Welsh coastal town where a local secret must be kept at all costs.

I was worried that this series would falter without the war. Clearly I underestimated Bess. This was solid.

Louise I haven‘t heard of this series. Do you recommend it? Right now, I‘m about 6 books into the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. 6y
CGeorge Maisie Dobbs has been on my TBR pile. Would you recommend it? I definitely recommend the Bess Crawford series. Some books are stronger than others, but she‘s a fantastic character and gives an interesting perspective. 6y

Bailedbailed

I bailed. Overall, the war is over. Bess takes leave to check on amputees. She doesn't tell anyone. She ends up Stranded in a Gothic like village WAY TOO LONG. I skip it, unless you are really invested in the series.

I won this ARC and misplaced it when it came 😥 Fixing to start now, because I found it. Review to come soon.
