Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are
Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are | Alan W Watts
2 posts | 8 read | 16 to read
At the root of human conflict is our fundamental misunderstanding of who we are. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the outside world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. In "The Book, " philosopher Alan Watts provides us with a much-needed answer to the problem of personal identity, distilling and adapting the ancient Hindu philosophy of Vedanta to help us understand that the self is in fact the root and ground of the universe. In this mind-opening and revelatory work, Watts has crafted a primer on what it means to be human and a manual of initiation into the central mystery of existence."

wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit everyone I‘ve talked to who‘s lived in Okinawa loved it. So I‘m super excited. Plus you‘re son is right—some of the best things come from Japan. And yes, I moved here (WA state) last February. 😂 The wandering is physical wandering as well as spiritual/metaphysical wandering. 😉 4y

#publishedinthe1960s As a teenager and young adult, my dad was a big fan of Alan Watts. These are his copies of two of his favorites. He gave me a copy of "the taboo against knowing who you are," when I left for college. #yearofgrieving #dadsreadinglist #aprilbookshowers

BarbaraTheBibliophage Aww. Nice to have those memories of your dad. There are lots of videos on YouTube with Alan Watts quotes. I've always found them thought provoking and beautiful. 7y
