Mehso-so

This book was so confusing I‘m still not sure what I read. I really enjoyed the history lesson on the harbor bridge, and the conscription protests. However Axel story was confounding. Even though this book is beautifully written I would not recommend it.

Bailedbailed

I have attempted three times to read this novel set in Sydney at a time of huge change - the erection of the Sydney Opera House and Australia‘s early involvement In the Vietnam War. I havedecided to abandon it. I just cannot engage with the slow and circuitousnarrative. There is no real feeling of anticipation or fear or change. The most prominent emotion is confusion, followed by ennui. I need to move on. #aussieapril #aww2019

Joanne1 I always thought it had the most uninteresting cover when I shelved it at work. Never inspired me to take it home now I‘m glad I didn‘t. I would recommend The Bridge which is (sort of) about the building of the west gate bridge in Melbourne. 2mo
AntoinetteBuchanan The Bridge is on my list, thanks for the tip. I didn‘t get to it in my Stella blitz this year but it will come through the library eventually 2mo

Pickpick

Shell is the story of Sydney in the 60‘s. It‘s about the Opera House being built, the looming Vietnam war, Australia‘s changing face and a relationship between a Swedish glass maker and an Australian journalist. It‘s wordy but beautiful words and insights.I remember the opening of the Opera House as a 12 year old and am pictured at 15 on its steps. I knew none of the controversy of its building, or our governments narrow views at the time. 4⭐️🤗
