Ummm...just picked up the next book in my TBR pile from the library and realized it's in French and not a translation. I know the basic story of Gigi thanks to the 1958 musical but it's been a long long time since I've used my French. I've always been able to read languages better than I could speak them so maybe I could muddle through?

Drocchio03 Go for it! I just listed to a Ted talk on polyglots. They say it‘s one of the best ways to learn (assuming you‘re keen on improving your French)! 🇫🇷 5y

I made it to Avignon just in time to catch the screening of the 1949 French film version of Gigi, in advance of its 70th anniversary. I loved the Leslie Caron version growing up, (fortunately, I don't think I quite understood the plot as a little girl 😂) and this one did not disappoint. The scheming aunt & grandmother, with their assertion that the life of a courtesan is highly desirable, is hard to swallow, but Gigi is a delight. I just wish ⬇️

mabell that she had stuck to her guns, holding out for what she truly wanted. I will have rewatch the musical version for comparison - and to hear Maurice Chevalier 🎶😄 #BackpackEurope #WhimsicalTour (edited) 6y
WhiskeyMistress @mabell I loved the musical version as a young girl (not understanding) as well! When I rewatched recently I found I still loved it.❤️ 6y
LiteraryinLawrence @WhiskeyMistress Jealous! So when I was growing up we watched the musical version all the time, and I loved it too. But when I watched it recently I found it so problematic that I was distracted from its charm. It was sad! 6y

WhiskeyMistress @LiteraryinLititz I take all fictional works with a grain of salt, making sure to reference historical context. So while the “arrangements” in the film don‘t make sense now, they did for that film world, and I felt Gigi found happiness in the end 💁☺️ 6y
mabell @WhiskeyMistress I'm glad you still love it! My husband has never seen it, so we'll be watching it soon! ❤️ 6y
mabell @LiteraryinLititz I could see viewing it a bit differently as an adult. I'm looking forward to rewatching and getting my husband's reaction (on his first time seeing it) 😄 6y
