"Reporter is just wonderful. Truly a great life, and what shines out of the book, amid the low cunning and tireless legwork, is Hersh's warmth and humanity. This book is essential reading for every journalist and aspiring journalist the world over." John le Carr From the Pulitzer Prize-winning, best-selling author and preeminent investigative journalist of our timea heartfelt, hugely revealing memoir of a decades-long career breaking some of the most impactful stories of the last half-century, from Washington to Vietnam to the Middle East. Seymour Hersh's fearless reporting has earned him fame, front-page bylines in virtually every major newspaper in the free world, honors galore, and no small amount of controversy. Now in this memoir he describes what drove him and how he worked as an independent outsider, even at the nation's most prestigious publications. He tells the stories behind the storiesriveting in their own rightas he chases leads, cultivates sources, and grapples with the weight of what he uncovers, daring to challenge official narratives handed down from the powers that be. In telling these stories, Hersh divulges previously unreported information about some of his biggest scoops, including the My Lai massacre and the horrors at Abu Ghraib. There are also illuminating recollections of some of the giants of American politics and journalism: Ben Bradlee, A. M. Rosenthal, David Remnick, and Henry Kissinger among them. This is essential reading on the power of the printed word at a time when good journalism is under fire as never before.

Mehso-so

Seymour Hersh is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist known for his work uncovering the My Lai massacre, the Watergate scandal and the Abu Ghraib war crimes. This memoir focuses on his career and how he broke his biggest stories but offers nothing personal, no analysis of changes in the profession or the ways anonymous sources can be used and misused. I think the book suffers for that, leaving it an okay factual read rather than an insightful one.

A bit of an up and down week… I did finish “Once Upon a Wine”- ⭐⭐⭐

“Land of Love and Drowning” was a quick DNF.

I fell into a bit of a reading slump, but now I‘ve started three new books. 😜

@Cinfhen

Centique I DNFed Land of Love and Drowning too. I got quite far and it was well written but it was disturbing. Didn‘t have the stomach for it! 4y
SLibrarian5 @Centique I DNFed pretty early into it. Agreed, the writing was beautiful, but the disturbing content was too much. Would have been a beautiful story without it. 4y

Merry Christmas Eve morning in Australia! I can‘t get books to my country town fast enough to participate in #swaps so I make my partner do #Jolabokaflod with me. His is all ready (homemade rocky road!) and I got one for his adult daughter who will be with us tonight. I‘ve tagged the book I hope I‘m getting. Have a great day everyone!!!!

CarolynM That looks great. Enjoy! 4y
LapReader I have a container now with popular books ready to go because it takes so long for my parcels to get anywhere so I can still participate in swaps. 4y
BookwormDownUnder @LapReader Great idea! I thought I had to send ones I found on their lists and stuff. Then it took so long to get there I worried it would be late. Finally decided to just buy myself a book when there was a swap I wanted to do! 😛 4y

So pleased to finish Our Mutual Friend which I‘d thought would take me another week. Also To be Taught if Fortunate, the Becky Chambers novella - if you like Interstellar (movie) you would like this! I started listening to Cinder on audio. I got the idea from Lauren and the Books (youtuber) to use audio for rereads and its working beautifully for me. I normally struggle with audio but revisiting a beloved book this way is lovely.

Centique No report from my The Elderly Father this week as I haven‘t caught up with him properly - full report next week I promise! 4y
